by Valorie Lennox The Review Mt. Newton is the house that caring built. The list of donors to the adult day care centre fills a book. Coun- try-style plaques scattered throughout the new facility list the major donors. Tomorrow the new $450,000 cenue on Mt. Newton Crossroad will be officially opened in a 3:30 p.m. ceremony. But the centre’s clients, seniors who need help to remain in the community, are already enjoying the homey atmosphere of Mt. Newton Centre. The new building was carefully designed to retain the farmhouse flavor of the original centre, located in a turn-of-the-century home. Antique and mock antique fur- nishings were chosen to help seni- ors feel at home. Offices feature roll-top desks and overstuffed chairs and couches throughout the centre invite guests to relax. An old wood stove — rewired to produce a working burner — bears a tea kettle and a vase of flowers to welcome visitors in the foyer. Getting all the details right took two years of fund-raising, planning and aggressive scrounging says centre executive director Patsy Berger-North. Staff and volunteers tracked down old-fashioned treasures at flea markets, garage sales and second-hand stores. A new couch, missing cushions, was picked up for $39 from a furniture retailer and matching cushions sewn; armchairs were found for $100 at a furniture store clear-out and a picture over the fireplace was donated by the fam- ily of a former client. “We stored things in people’s attics and basements and lofts. We had stuff all over the community,” Berger-North said. The resulting collection gives the centre the look of a home, where pieces don’t quite match and were gradually purchased, father than the look of an institu- tion. She estimates almost $75,000 worth of equipment or furniture was donated. Among the new pieces of equip- ment is a $15,000 Apollo bath which can be entered seated on a sliding chair. The end of the bath is then sealed and a switch fills the 50- gallon bath in 90 seconds. The bath also has an optional whirl- pool for physiotherapy and those with circulatory problems. The centre also has a sun room, a lounge with a fireplace, waiting and consultation room, beauty parlor, volunteer room, clinic, kit- chen and offices. Te FANS ALREADY of the new Mt. Newton Day Care centre are (right) Evelyn Stainby in the lounge, (fac- ing page, clockwise from top) Marion Goundrey pouring juice in the spe- cially equipped small. kif- chen, Frank Loveless being There is — reluctantly — a small smoking room with outside venting. “You're not going to change people at this age,” Berger-North admits. — Two rooms, a mock bedroom and a small kitchen equipped with special equipment, are designed to help seniors prepare to return to their homes after a hospital stay. The centre is beside Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Construction funding for the new building were provided by the Ministry of Health and the Capital Regional District. A Go B.C. lot- tery grant of $126,225 provided parking, paving, lighting and an equipment loan building. The as-yet-unfinished landscap- ing will also be done through donations, Berger-North said. Overseeing the landscaping pro- ject is an 81-year-old volunteer. The centre is operated under the provincial long-term care program with funding from the provincial government, United Way and the Victoria Health Project.
