A couple of homes on the west - side of the highway and on the north side of Beacon Avenue, may be affected, but Singer could not say to what extent. “Tt’s too early to state categori- cally,’ Singer said. ~ We'll know in six months when the final design drawing is complete.” LANDS END INTERCHANGE Starting from the north end of the highway, planners have just finished the preliminary design for an interchange called Alternative K at the Lands End Road intersec- tion. Council in North Saanich will © be shown the preliminary design = “to show what the liaison commit- . tee has come up with.” Singer said there are some issues on Alternative K yet to be resolved. “The liaison committee agreed to it in principle but it wasn’t 100 per cent,” Singer said. “The Cur- teis Point people don’t necessarily support it but of all the options shown this is the one they sup- port.” Singer said Curteis Point resi- LOOP dents don’t want an interchange at all. Alternative K is the result of about 10 meetings of the liaison committee and will be brought to council sometime this month, he Said. Moving south, there are no plans for changes to the highway inter- section at Wain Road, although there may be some minor improve- ments in the future, he said. The John Road/McDonald Park Road intersection was dropped from the project, after originally being slated for an interchange. Now, plans are to close access and egress to and from the high- way at John and McDonald Park Roads, once the Beacon inter- change is completed, he said. As for the tourist information booth: “Now we're looking at whether we can leave it in place. I think we can but we're looking at it.” At Weiler Avenue, plans are to close the nght-turm exit from the highway for southbound traffic once the Beacon interchange is complete. Singer said that con- Struction of Sterling Way, around the airport runway from Beacon Avenue to Canora Road, was done so Weiler could be closed. No changes are planned for the traffic-light controlled McTavish Road intersection, Singer said. At Amity Road and the highway, a Continued from Page Al easier to work with them than against them.” Highways project planner Gregg Singer said last week the inter- change planned for the Island iew Road intersection, identified as Alternative 3, will likely take a comer of the new building. “There’s a very real possibility we will impact on that,” Singer said. ““We may be buying a comer of his building. “It’s unfortunate there was a period of reflection, * Singer said. A building permit was issued for construction to begin while the highway upgrade plans were on hold, Singer said. Buying a portion of the building won’t be cheap, Mickelberry said. “Tf they-ever come back to me it’s going to cost a fortune,” Mickelberry said. “It'll be a pretty deluxe building when it’s done.” He said the completed building will be similar in appearance to the B.C. Systems Corporation building in Victoria. “T contemplate (highway plans) will have some impact on my site but I don’t know how much,” Mickelberry said. “We were prepared to work with them initially but when they couldn’t commit . . . that’s stupid when you’ve got half a million tied up in Jand alone,” Mickelber- ry said. Central Saanich council approved a development variance permit last November, a building permit for the foundation was issued in December and the final building permit was issued March 27, municipal staff said. “IMPROVING YOUR HEARING IS OUR CONCERN” MRS. We haven’t set up a meeting yet but there is a whole series of minor intersections that need to be addressed.” No changes will be made to the . Mt. Newton Crossroad intersec- tion, although the police depart- ment has identified it as the worst intersection on the Central Saa- nich portion of highway. “The first thing to figure out is why it’s (called) the worst inter- section because, from a design point of view, it’s one of the best,” Singer said. ““You can’t fix a problem until you know what the problem is.” ISLAND VIEW/KEATING Some issues have yet to be addressed but “more than likely we ll proceed with Alternative 3” for an interchange at Island View Road and the Pat Bay Highway, Singer said. He identified two issues yet to be addressed: Creating access for areas on the east side of the highway that will be cut off by an interchange, and approaching the design on the Saanich Crossroad section. yy OVEREATERS 4 ANCOR You are not alone. But Singer said; “We don’t see a real need to go back to the public on the preliminary design pro- posal.” A public information session could be scheduled when highway planners get into the detailed design process, about six months away at the earliest, Singer said. Both East Saanich Road and Keating Crossroad will be closed after the interchange is complete. Martindale Road access to the highway will be closed once the interchange is built, with traffic directed to either Lochside Drive or a new frontage road. Plans for Tanner Road haven’t been: finalized and highway plan- ners will have further discussions with the municipality in that regard, he said. Signal-light controlled intersec- tions will remain at Haliburton and Sayward Roads, although the original scope of the project called for an interchange at Sayward. The ministry is looking at re- aligning the highway between Ver- non Avenue and McKenzie Ave- nue to create a frontage road,- Singer said: “The residential area will access (the highway) via local roads to Carey Road,” Singer said. At the Quadra Street intersec- tion, a new off-ramp for north- bound traffic will likely be built and the existing on-ramp for northbound traffic will be recon- structed. The Royal Oak Avenue intersec- tion will remain the same, the Vanalman Avenue intersection will be a subject for discussion with the municipality of Saanich, as will the intersection at Lily Ave- nue. At McKenzie Avenue, public information meetings into two alternatives, including a proposed modified parclo (partial clover- leaf) interchange, plus a frontage road, will be held April 19-20. One of the proposals for McKenzie is to put a loop inter- change in the southeast quadrant, he said. SUNDAYS AT MUFFET & LOUIS 9:30-6:00 WEEKDAYS 10:00 - 6:00 SATURDAYS a $4 8°?
