News _TheReview Wednesday, April 11, 1990 — A12_ Beginning of the end at Port Royale by Glenn Werkman The Review Seven days of pounding with dynamic compaction equipment is slated for a residential develop- ment on the old B.C. Hydro prop- erty below Wallace Drive, follow- ing a Central Saanich committee decision Monday. The technique, using a crawler crane brought into Brentwood Bay by barge, will replace the need for about 500 gravel trucks to haul chunks of reinforced concrete from the Port Royale Estates property, and returning with about 500 truck loads of crushed gravel, Canlan Investment Corporation vice- president Gordon Cameron said. Cameron asked committee for approval to cross a sea wall right- of-way with the crane — which will be used to repeatedly drop about 30,000 Ibs. of dead weight from 40-50 feet in the air, in 40-second intervals. The technique will compact steel reinforced chunks of concrete that were used to fill 20-foot basements that were part of the B.C Hydro facility, Cameron said. The property’s previous owner had filled the holes with rubble and Canlan is concemed that voids left within the fill will settle over years, resulting in deficiencies to buildings it plans to build over top. “It's a matter of compacting to get proper certification,” Cameron said. “It will shorten the time frame to less than a month.” After a seven-day period of compacting with the heavy equip- ment about one month is required for the last of the site preparation Trivelt receives award from Sidney Rotary The force behind Sidney Days was recognized with a plaque and a cheque from the Sidney Rotary Club last week. Long-time Peninsula Celebra- tions Society organizer Don Tri- vett was named the recipient of the Sidney Rotary Service Award, Wednesday. Along with the plaque is a cheque, which Trivett will donate to the Peninsula Celebrations Society. “We're always on the dole for money and anytime we can pick up an extra $500 it just makes it easier,” Trivett said: : “The timing was perfect. They give it to a guy just before he has to do it again.” The society is hard at work towards the 1990 edition of Sidney Days, planned for June 30, July 1-2. “I was very flattered and hon- ored and said there are plenty of other people who deserve (the award) more than me,” Trivett said. “It’s a nice plague and I think it’s a good idea. I hope they do it every year.” A Sidney Rotary spokesman said the plaque was presented by club president Don Amos in rec- ognition of Trivett’s contribution tO many community projects. The Peninsula Celebrations Society helps organize the Christ- mas Sailpast and puts together plans for the Sidney Days Parade, Sidney Days fireworks and the Miss Sidney Pageant. DON TRIVETT A new float is under construc- tion for this year’s parade, Trivett said. This year’s Miss Sidney Pageant is being organized by Christa Southern and “we're still looking for more girls to get involved in the pageant,” Trivett said. The pageant will be held May 18, in time for the winners to appear in the Victoria Day Parade ~ with the new float. Persons wanting 1o get involved can call Trivett for more informa= tion at 656-7990. NICHOLAS W. LOTT TIMOTHY F LOTT D. MAYLAND MCKIMM 9830 FOURTH ST. Trucking could take more than two months. Aldermen expressed concern about dust and! noise from the technique and were assured it would be less noisy than blasting. Sand will be used around the site so no dust will result, Cameron Said. Ald. Wayne Watkins said: ““My primary concem is for the resi- dents of the existing area.” Nelson Beaton of Geopac West Ltd. said in previous jobs an initial rash of phone calls are received from Tesidents wanting to know what is going on, followed by interest in the brute-force tech- nique. “It creates a very low thump, it’s not a grating thing,” Beaton said. Ald. Arlene Box said: ““We don’t have much of a choice. Obviously its a no win-no win Situation as far as the residents are concerned.” Committee recommended that council approve the request sub- ject to adequate closure of the sea wall walkway, adequate insurance and bonds, and provided noufica- tion of the work is made to all residents within 500 feet of the Port Royale property line. “Believe me, itll be worth it,” Watkins said. A photo survey of existing homes in the area is planned by Canlan before the work begins — for comparison should complaints of structural cracks be reported following the work. } | i mi MII Hh) ll ee | nal WV See | | TF via British Ainways © Daily Continental Breakfast F y" Mit | s — : 5 BUH SRI e!) —— NG. | we : © Return airline tickets for 2 from Vancouver © 6 nights hotel accommodation Von asatibilinGantest ends 5700p.
