The Peninsula team took the _ B.C. Cup game 1-0 in dramatic fashion, locking up one of two final berths to the Coastal Cup Soccer Challenge, scheduled for Nanaimo Apnil 21-22. Because of a series of injuries to key players over the last week, this was the most impressive win for Colour so far in the tournament, coach John McDonald said. Midfielder Graig (Bulldog) Sutherland was out with a tom thigh muscle, defenseman Rease (Safety Valve) Larson was out with a swollen eye after a baseball incident Thursday and defenceman Bryan Terrell was playing injured with a pulled thigh muscle. This left the team with the minimum of 11 players, compared to 15 bigger players fielded by the Sounders. In the first few minutes of the game the Sounders started aggres- sively taking the ball to into Col- our’s end, where some early game jitters were showing through. Colour’s goalkeeper Brian Timms saved two sure goals, keep- ing the Peninsula team in the game and giving players restored confi- dence. The play became more evenly- matched with both teams having chances but neither team able 1o finish. Colour’s patented ‘Trap Play’ worked well, once again, catching several Sounder players off-side on numerous plays. Unfortunately for the game, the Sounders’ parents and coaches were very vocal on several of the closer off-side calls by the referee. After a series of warnings the Sounders’ coach was red-carded and ejected from the game for ungentlemanly conduct. The resulting penalty shot was taken by defender Jon Goule?, who fired a high hard shot that hit the crossbar and bounced into the net.’ Midway through the first half, Colour midfielder Gus Morris was accidentally kicked in the back of the ankle and had to be helped from the field. Fortunately he was able to return in the second half and alternate with the already- injured Bryan Terrell at left full- back. The only goal of the game came late in the first half after Colour midfielders Jim Saunderson and Chris McDonald worked the ball up the middle to Lee Dryden. Dryden took it inside the 18- yard box and while trying to get a shot off was fouled from behind. The resulting penalty shot was taken by defender Jon Goulet, who fired a high hard shot that hit the crossbar and bounced into the net. The second half was a hard- fought 30 minutes as Colour’s injured defensive corps struggled , | @ bravely to preserve the win. <= Playing outstanding were Dar- rell Underwood, who normally plays forward but replaced Rease Larson at fullback, Goulet, Jay Loveridge, Terrell, Gus Morris and _ Shaun Kingerlee. The Sounders came close late in _ the game, hitting the crossbar and the post, but keeper Timms shut them out on all other plays. Magic Colour advances to Cale- donia Park in Nanaimo for the Coastal Cup Challenge finals and will play the winner of a Langley/ Richmond regional playoff, at 9:30 st a.m. April 21. | ACUPRESSURE For Pain, Stress Chronic Conditions (No Needles) Marjorie Herring B.Sc., M.Sc., Certified Acupressurist 656-8768 Kents Cabinets and Furniture SY For a Free Estimate Call and plan summer holidays,” }- Amanda Morris at 656-1347.
