GLENN WERKMAN photo Peninsula sweep in field hockey maiches All Peninsula teams swept through Lower Island league teams in men’s and women’s field hockey action last weekend. In ladies’ Division 2 action Saturday at ihe Oak Bay Oval the Hotel Sidney Hobbits impressed coach Norman Keevil with a 4-1 victory over the Sanderlings. Maureen Campbell led the scor- ing with two goals while Shelly Collis and Lynn Lewis each added singles. Collis opened the scoring 10- minutes into the first half but the Sanderlings managed to tie the score by the end of the opening time frame. In the second half the Hobbits scored three unanswered goals to take the victory and a good grip on third place in league standings with 13 points. In ladies’ Division 3 action, the Kapteyns held the Dolphins to a scoreless first half led by strong play by Caroline Patterson, then tumed on the offense. Just after the second half opened Christine Buckle put the Kapteyns on the scoreboard with a good scoring play. The team held the 1-0 lead until near the end of the game when Joan McKimm scored the insur- ance goal. “Tt was a fast exciting game,” a team spokesman said. The win puts the Kapteyns in second place, a marked improve- ment from basement standings the team experienced in past years. In men’s field hockey play, the Division 2 Brentwood team defeat- ed the Duncan team in Cowichan Sunday with a 1-0 score. Brad McEwan scored the single within the first five minutes of the game and the team held together to preserve the lead. The old Brigs team has strug- gled this year after splitting into two teams — one in each division. The Division 1 Brentwood men’s team didn’t make the cut for a playoff berth but the Division 2 team will start playoff action this weekend. In upcoming ladies’ action, the Kapteyns meet the Emeralds at Oak Bay, Saturday at 10 a.m., for an exhibition match, getting ready for an April 21 playoff start. The Hobbits, meanwhile, will meet the first-place Victoria Ath- letics Saturday at 12 noon in the final league game of the season. The Hobbits need to retain a fourth-place standing to qualify for playoffs, Karla Sandwith said. W OFF SALE sidney’s Kayaking Centre &® BIRKENSTOCK sanvacs 20% 656-9888
