Liberals get ready for writ by Glenn Werkman The Review A meeting to nominate a Liberal party candidate to run in the Saanich North and The Islands constituency in the next provincial general election will be held April 24. “We want to get going,” consti- tuency association president and lone announced candidate Clive Tanner said. Membership in the constituency association is up to about 150 members, Tanner said. Provincial leader Gordon Wil- son from the Sechelt-North Coast area is expected to be at the nomination meeting, he said. In the last general election, fought on the old dual-member boundaries, Tanner received about two-thirds of his 6,000-odd votes from the north part of Saanich and the Islands “so I’m reasonably hopeful,” Tanner said. A new. Saanich North and The Islands constituency association executive will be elected at the April 24 meeting, to replace the executive elected at the constitu- ency association’s founding meet- ing, which was held in November. On the federal front, Tanner will attend a May 5 meeting of the local Liberal association in Sidney as vice-president of the Liberal’s Saanich-Gulf Islands riding asso- ciation. But Tanner said he won’t allow his name to stand as a possible delegate at the National Leader- ship Convention, June 20-23 in Calgary, in protest of the process. “Frankly I’m disgusted with the system and I don’t like what's going on in other (ridings),”” Tan- ner said. His objection is that members in one provincial constituency asso- ciation, who also automatically hold federal party membership, can go into another constituency and vie for the federal delegate selection. In some cases, hard working Liberal party members have been unfairly denied delegate selection in favor of a member from another constituency, Tanner said. “Some memberships (in popu- lar ridings) have been inflated and outsiders come in and take the delegate status away,” Tanner said. “Tn some cases we have people moving from one constituency to another.” He favors a system where each member would have the ability to vote as a delegate. But he admits changing the system would be a huge undertak- ing. Tanner expects to be too busy on the provincial scene to have time to devote to the federal leadership race anyway. The Saanich-Gulf Islands Liber- al association also holds the dis- tinction as the last national nding to hold its delegate selection meet- ing. Tanner is expecting there will be a large turnout May 5 but said none of the five hopefuls — Jean Chretien, Sheila Copps, Paul Mar- tin Jr, John Nunziata and Tom Wappel — are expected to attend. B.C Liberal party president Floyd Sully will attend. Contract awarded | A single bid to cut grass in North Saanich parks and boule- vards was accepted by council April 2, although some council members suggested re-tendering the contract. The sole tender was submitted by Sidney Tractor Service, which offered to do the job for $6,850 per year plus $28 an hour. The previ- ous year’s contract was $2,950. Ald. Art McKinnon suggested the contract be re-tendered, how- ever administrator Ron O’Genski said the contract would be difficult to re-tender once the initial tender has been opened. He added re-tendering would not be fair to the single bidder. Municipal engineer Igor Zahyn- acz said the municipality con- tacted seven contractors about the contract but were told all of the companies are busy. Ald. Brian Dunic, who owns a landscaping company, said the bids submitted in previous years were too low for any company to make a profit. Zahynacz said the municipality could buy an $8,000 lawn mower attachment for an existing trailer and do the grass-cutting at a cost similar to the tendered amount. Given the staff time involved in cutting the grass, council decided to continue to contract out the work. Council also voted April 2 to award the 1990 spring clean-up contract to Sidney Tractor, which submitted the low bid of $5,290.
