Gardening This weather is really wonder- ful, isn’t it? The soil is warming up, the tulips and daffodils are blooming, and the ornamental trees on the Peninsula have never been more beautiful. Incidently, that glorious tree, adomed in a million white blos- soms, newly planted next to the path from the parking lot at the Sidney-North Saanich library is called Prunus serrulata Shirotae. (1 was pretty sure someone would ask, so I hurried home and looked it up!) Because we haven’t had any rain for ages many things in the garden, and especially those in pots, need watering; I’ve already started to haul hoses. This has to be just about my least favorite job; it’s almost enough to get a fella to start praying for rain! Just in case it doesn’t rain in the next little while, I think you’d be wise to take a good look at things such as rhodo- dendrons, azaleas, and hydrangeas, which require a lot of moisture, and if the ground seems dry give them all a good soaking. It would be a shame for the rhodos to drop their buds just as they are about to bloom. A caller this week wanted to know if it was safe to use com- posted oak leaves in the garden. I'm afraid readers may have been frightened by remarks about wal- nut leaves being harmful if used around certain plants such as rho- dodendrons. This is a shame, because almost all leaves make good compost, including oak leaves. Because the latter have an acid content they would be great under all the acid loving shrubs. The only problem with oak leaves is that they take an age to break down. I have been re-digging the raised beds, mixing in the decomposed fall rye as I turn the soil, and honestly the ground has never looked so fertile, and full of humus . . . full of worms, as well, big fat whoppers of things. I hate to dig really, as far too often I slice them TheReview Wednesday, April 11,1990 — Bay Warm soil and pretty flowers up, and feel like a murderer when I see two half-worms twisting in mortal agony. The resident robin, though, sang a different tune as he gobbled up the remains. He couldn’t believe his good fortune! At this stage we have the first planting of peas (Little Marvel) just coming through the ground, the spinach is up, the onion sets are planted but aren’t up yet, and I put in a short row of summer tumips. One thing I did do, as the soil seemed very heavy, was to cover the seeds with potting soil, hopefully giving them a chance to pop through more easily. May I suggest to all of you who will be growing carrots, or turnips or radishes, or even beets and chard, that you buy yourselves some Reemay cloth. This stuff is truly wonderful if draped loosely over your rows, the edges firmly down against the dirt with rocks, or boards, or even covered care- fully with soil, to prevent the entry of carrot rust flies, cabbage moths and leaf miners — those beasts that cause all the trouble! You may water through it, of course. The one disadvantage might be that things grow taller under this covering since it does screen Out some light. Just remem- ber to leave lots of room for plants to get tall undermeath, and you will bless it at harvest time. Not a worm hole anywhere! Two questions: first, would the young woman who is attempting to farm organically and was exper- iencing terrible problems with Church Services wire-worms please give me a call? And please, does anyone know how to dry flowers in the micro- wave? My caller would like printed instructions if any of you know where such might be availa- ble. I have bought a small box of Yukon Gold seed potatoes, just to have a change from our usual Pontiacs and Kennebecks. “‘him- self” is protesting that his special favorites are Pontiacs, so I guess I'll have to put in at least one row of them as well. I am going to “chit” them and will tell you all about it in the next week’s col- umn. (A thrill a minute, ch!) FRIENDSHIP BAPTIST CHURCH 7820 Central Saanich Rd.
