The plaque was given to recog- nize the work done each year by Assault suspect released A Sidney man charged with two counts of assaulting police was released from custody Thursday. But he was back in custody Monday on breach of probation charges. Then he was released Monday afternoon following a hearing in Victoria provincial court. Lyndon Charles Valan, 19, was released on a $1,000 recognizance by Judge Ralph Hudson. Yalan, in custody on the March 26 assault charges, was earlier released by Judge Robert Greig, in Sidney provincial court Thursday. Crown Counsel Edward Orm- heim tried to re-open the bail hearing later Thursday, after receiving more information from police, but Greig refused. Ormheim then gave Valan notice of a bail review to be held in Sidney provincial court Monday. Monday morning Valan was arrested by police on charges of breaching probation on Feb. 5 and on March 26. Judge Stephen Denroche declined to rule on the bail hearing originally heard by Judge Greig. The bail review was adjourned to Victoria Monday afternoon. Defence lawyer Tom Morino told Victoria Judge Hudson the breach of probation charges were Jaid so Valan could be placed in custody. Judge Hudson said the breach charges under which Valan was arrested could have been laid ear- lier. Allowing Valan to remain in custody could lead to Crown coun- sel holding back breach of proba- tion charges against suspects, Hud- son said.
