She has worked at Panorama as a swim- ming instructor: passing the course gives her additional hours as a lifeguard. i Grant went through all the Red Cross swimming levels, took some synchronized swimming and obtained her bronze medallion and bronze cross, both pre-requisites for the lifeguard course. Grant was most apprehensive about the accident simulations. For her, the major incident was a spinal injury which required eas- ing the swimmer onto a board and out of the water: Other students dealt with mock drownings, heart attacks, heat stroke or exhaustion, allergic reac- tions, cramps, infractions of pool tules and complaints. Grant said course standards are high, since the lifeguards are responsible for the safety of the : ae : Sealy said most students are 16 to 20 years old. Some are former competitive swimmers and some are “pool rats”, swimming enthu- siasts who take lessons and swim frequently. Older brothers and sisters or parents who also worked in aquat- ics encourage some teenagers to obtain the lifeguard qualification. The students learn how the body reacts to injury, so they can the course material in addition to 10 hours a week in the pool, practicing their skills. They also spend four hours a week taking the course. “The biggest problem for some of them is that they don’t realize how intense the course is,” Healy said.
