™*ReviewW Wednesday, April 4,1990 _ Ad _ Sidney seeks cost estimate of economic development idea by George Lee The Review Sidney aldermen want the Chamber of Commerce to put cost estimates where its hopes of Peninsula-wide economic devel- opment are. And tri-municipal economic planning has been sought before without much success, a chamber delegation heard Monday. The town has had an economic development commission in place for several years, which resulted in the 1987 John Ronald report. The report addresses Sidney only, because the reaction to joint planning was ‘“‘mixed at that time,” Mayor Norma Sealey said. “So the provincial people said that it was best we went our separate way,” Sealey said. Although the committee hasn’t been active lately, it is still in place and the next stage is to develop a brochure on the town, Sealey said. “Until some magic umbrella is created to cover the Peninsula, perhaps we should do our own (economic development),” Sealey said. But perhaps the chamber can create that umbrella, said its municipal affairs and economic development chairman, Paul Dee- ton. “Take a chance on giving us the ball,” Deeton said. “We might be able to take it to the next level. ~The funding is there and they (the province) are dying to give communities the money.” Contrary to media reports, other Peninsula municipalities aren’t averse to the idea, Deeton said. North Saanich’s response has been reported in a negative light. But Deeton said his optimism isn’t unfounded because North Saanich is willing to carry on discussions. “There is some interest in both municipalities,” he said. Central Saanich is “very interested.” ‘Until some magic umbrella is created to cover the Peninsula, perhaps we should do our own’ -Mayor Sealey And “there are some issues North Saanich would like to look at.” But Sealey said those areas are limited — and in fact two wouldn’t even fall under a Penin- sula economic development com- mission’s mandate. North Saanich wants to discuss farmers’ markets. But the other issues — the sale of sludge and the use of cloth or paper garbage bags — are regional district issues, Sealey said. Fire damages curling rink Central Saanich firemen extin- guished a grass fire on Wallace Drive shortly after 2 p.m. March Qi, A propane fed fire at the Glen Meadows Curling Rink did an estimated $8,500 damage to the McTavish Road building and equipment Thursday. North Saanich firemen were cal- led at 12:45 p.m. after the rink’s ice resurfacer malfunctioned and ignited. A propane tank attached to the resurfacer ruptured, adding to the blaze, which charred the back wall of the curling rink, Damage to the building was estimated at $5,000 and damage to the machine at $3,500. On Sunday afternoon North Saanich firemen extinguished an out-of-control slash burn on Mayneview Terrace. At 8:20 p.m., North Saanich firemen were called to a chimney fire on Deep Cove Road. The fire was confined to the chimney. Other than Capital Regional District information, there is little community profile -information available, Lee said. The CRD information isn’t spe- cific enough, she said. The requests come -from indi- viduals and businesses wanting to move to the Peninsula. Lee also made a case for support of the chamber’s role in promoting tourism. The Pat Bay Highway tourist information booth handled 32,947 inquiries last year. Each inquiry represents a travelling group; it could be one person, it could be a family of five. : Sidney’s First Street booth, which greets Washington State Ferry traffic, had about 17,000 inquiries. 0 Hook a Fly in Fishing Trip for 2! Sealey said council plans to become a chamber member, rather than pay for its membership in the Tourism Association of Vancouver Island. Committee-of-the-whole wants the chamber to tell the town how Much money it seeks for tourism and economic development. The Kidney Foundation supports research, patient services and public education.
