The Saanich Peninsula branch of the Navy League of Canada is_ the proud new owner of an IBM €System/34 mainframe computer, courtesy of C-FAX 1070 radio. The computer was used to han- dle program and commercial sche- duling, and accounts, by the station but now will be used to store cadet data. “The computer will keep track of our gear and training aids, equipment and cadet records for two cadet corps,” said Branch president Don Coutts said. The computer system will also be made available to community groups around the Peninsula, Coutts said. The system includes a central processing unit, two terminals and s Mainframe compuier donated a high-speed line printer. It was moved into the Navy League cadets headquarters at the Victoria International airport. C-FAX vice-president Terry Spence said: “When we recently upgraded our computer system, the IBM mainframe that has served us so well became surplus. “We were faced with selling it or donating it to a worthwhile community organization.” The radio station ran some spots to see who might have a use for it and got a large number of enquir- ies, Spence said. “The Navy League was our final choice because of the exten- sive use they will be able to make of the system,” Spence said. TheReview Wednesday, March 28, 1990 — AQ Individual learning is focus of pre-school A new Montesson pre-school will start in Sidney next Septem- ber at the Montessori Centre of Sidney, 10345 Bowerbank Road. “Since the inception of the Pacific Montessori, Society in 1980, there has been interest expressed by parents in Sidney for a Montessori program closer to home,” said Victoria centre princi-- pal Karen Colussi. “Tt has always been our goal to establish Montessori programs wherever there was an interest expressed but this is the first time we have been able to co-ordinate a physical setting and a properly qualified staff.” Registrations are being taken now for the pre-school, which will be operated by the Pacific Montes- sori Society. Half-day and full-day pre-school programs are available, as are extended hours for working parents. The education program is based on the work of Italian physician Maria Montessori, who developed her then-unique child-based sys- tem in the early 1900s. Montessori believed young chil- dren will learn if placed in an Auxiliary policemen honored A crowd of 150 people packed into the Sidney firehall Friday night to honor the 1989-90 gra- duating class of RCMP auxiliary constables. Each graduating constable has completed 160 hours of training time on the street with regular officers or in classes on various required courses. “They are now full fledged auxiliary constables,” Sidney RCMP Gst. Brian Hodgkin said. Among the graduates honored were nine auxiliary constables from Sidney and two from Saltspr- ing Island. With the new graduating auxili- ary constables the Sidney auxilia- ry force is up to a full compliment of 18 members. Retiring auxiliary constable ~ member Marshall Hunt was pre- sented with a five-year service award. The Pacific Montessori Society operates a pre-school and elemen- lary Montessori program for kin- dergarten to Grade 7 in Victoria. The elementary program is now recognized as an independent school by the B.C. government, despite setbacks like the fire in May, 1985, which demolished the school.
