Editor: Glenn Werkman 656-1151 TheReview Wednesday, March 28, 1990 — B3 Peninsula schools gel players on rugby rep team Both Peninsula secondary schools have representatives on the Sooke-Saanich Reps rugby team which played in the first- ever Lower Island High School Rugby League All Star game Tuesday. Stelly’s Stingers coach Mark Wyatt, a Canadian internation- al’s player, takes four players from the high school squad onto a team he co-coaches with Claremont coach Roy Radu. The Stelly’s players repre- sented are Colin Plant, Kevin Paul, Tye Swallow and Bill Adye. From the Parkland Panthers’ team are players Kevin Smith, Terry James, Andrew Clarke and George Landsberger. The rep team was scheduled to meet the Greater Victoria Selects in an All Star game to be played at UVic’s McCoy Road field at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Selects are made up of players from Oak Bay, Mt. Doug, Esquimalt and Victoria High while a full dozen players from Claremont Secondary will join players on the Sooke- Saanich Rep team. Hobbits opened field hockey scoring Saturday The Hotel Sidney Hobbits Division 2 ladies’ field hockey team opened a game against the Evergreens Saturday at UVic by scoring a quick goal. Maureen Campbell put the Peninsula team on the score- board just minutes into the first half, but it was the only goal the team got. The Evergreens battled back through the first half and man- aged a goal just before the half-time whistle sounded. In the second half the Ever- greens came on strong, scoring two back-to-back goals to take a 3-1 lead that held until full time. Some of the Kapteyns’ Divi- sion 3 players bolstered the Hobbits offense but it wasn’t enough to make the difference. The Kapteyns had a bye last weekend and expect to resume play this weekend. Sutherland relayed the ball to Darrell Underwood, who laid off a nice pass to Farrant for the goal. Trainer Bruce Underwood, a Division 3 men’s player, has been working with the under-12 youth team and has made a substantial difference, McDonald said. The first half started with both teams showing some early-going jitters. Magic Colour was fortunate to escape several early rushes by fast Nanaimo wingers who just missed. However, Colour’s defence, headed by Bryan Terrell, Rease Larson, Jon Goulet and Jay Lover- idge soon adjusted to cover the quick break and the momentum switched to Peninsula’s favor. “Tt was a tremendous effort by all Magic Colour players, who have been getting stronger and more confident each week,’ coach John McDonald said. Colour finished off the first half with a nice goal after midfielder Gus Mortis crossed the ball from the left side to winger Underwood, who again laid off a nice pass to midfielder Lee Dryden — who scored his first goal of the playoffs.
