Memory of longtime firefighter honored with Rotary donation:

The memory of a longtime fire-
fighter with two Peninsula fire
departments will be remembered
im a special way at the Sidney
Volunteer Fire Department hall on
Third Street.

Pete Whitehouse had a long
history of involvement with volun-
ge departments, said Sidney Rot-

ary Club spokesman Lloyd Har-
Top.

He not only helped found the
Central Saanich Volunteer Fire
Department but also served on the

Sidney department for about 30
years.

During that ttme Whitehouse
participated in the ambulance ser-
vice, which was then operated by
the Sidney fire department.

“It was largely through his
efforts that funding for the Jaws of
Life was obtained from the Sidney
Rotary Club,” Harrop said.

In memory of his honor the
Sidney Rotary Club donated

$1,000 to the Sidney Volunteer

Fire Department.

Chief Mel Baldwin said the
money will be used to build a
showcase inside the firehall that
will be used to house archives of
the fire departments early days.

Much of the Sidney departments
early memorabilia was gathered
up by another long-time volunteer
firefighter — Fred Musclow.

Musclow collected numerous
books and developed the history of
the department, which dates back
to 1914.

The department plans to install
the showcase in the upstairs
assembly hall.

As a dedicated Rotarian of long
standing, Whitehouse was active
im many projects, including the
operation of the games of chance
at the annual agricultural fall fair.

Whitehouse was honored by tel-
low Rotarians by being named a
Paul Harris Fellow and served as
president of the Sidney Rotary
Club in 1979-80.
