Marcia Galbraith Victoria be Saanich Pioneers’ are preserving Editor: John Squance’s letter (“Plea to preserve” The Review - March 14) @ has prompted the Saanich Pion- eers’ Society to make the follow- ing reply. We are a group of people much concerned with the preser- vation of the Peninsula’s pioneer history. The Society's Log Cabin Museum (on the Agricultural Society’s Fair Grounds in Saani- > chton) was built in the early 1930’s by descendants of those same pioneers with the express purpose of keeping such history alive. The museum houses a large collection of local and Indian arti- facts, and the archival section con- tains over 400 files on the pioneer families, hundreds of photos and many family histories and genea- logical charts. For the past two years the archi- val group of volunteer workers has made a complete index of the information contained in the files and a comprehensive cross- reference system is now in the _course of preparation. @ All this data is being placed on computers, and grants have been received from the Seniors Lottery of B.C. and the New Horizons Ses to assist in this work. he society also has for sale a book on the lives of the pioneers of North and South Saanich. Accordingly we cordially invite Mr. Squance and any other inter- ested members of the public, to visit the Log Cabin any Monday morning between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. when the volunteers hold the weekly work session on _ the archives to see what has been ~ achieved to date. There is no age limit, young or older are all wel- come, so Mr. Squance might even be persuaded to join in our work! Jean Kennell, Secretary Saanich Pioneers’ Society A breath away Editor: Our group of volunteers recently formed the Vancouver Island Branch of the Asthma Society of Canada. Our aim is to raise funds to develop greater community awareness of the disease and to foster educational programmes. As funds become available, we plan to sponsor an Asthma Aware- ness Week to focus on activities for children with asthma, informa- tion seminars for adults including those with asthma, parents of asth- matics, teachers and athletic coaches, and group support ses- sions. The first fund raising function will be a dinner/auction to be held April 6th. A variety of items will be auctioned in a fun atmosphere with all merchandise donated by local business and professional people. Those wishing further informa- tion regarding tickets for the event or on how the society could use their volunteer services are encouraged to get in contact with the branch president at 384-8181. Remember for an asthmatic - happiness is just a breath away. Dabney Allingham Victoria Halt gamble Editor: In the March 7, 1990 article (“Lumber Lemons of a Hot Mar- ket Buyers”) a remark attributed to a realtor begs correction. The quote “even when not pressured by the market, only 10 per cent of home buyers get a house inspec- tion” is far from correct. Using the Greater Victoria Real Estate Board monthly house sales figures, I personally inspect between 10 and 15 per cent of the total monthly real estate sales in Victoria and I am only one of the inspectors in our company. With the other half, the purchasers must feel that the money saved on the inspection is worth the gamble. Rick Couvelier President : Sherlock Home Inspection Service Ltd. Why the arms? Editor: I pose the question why? But I get no answer. Many people throughout the world ask the same question but they too get no answer. When we read the newspapers or watch television about the fight- ing and killing of people in coun- tries like Lebanon, Afghanistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia and even Haiti and Central and South America, the question we all raise is why there are so many arma- ments involved in all the disputes. These nations do not have the ability to make these weapons neither do they have the money to buy these tools of destruction. But somewhere in this world there are many people who are making unknown wealth and they want those weapons to be made and those weapons to be sold and those weapons to be destroyed so that they can be replaced with other more vicious ones. Why, I continue to ask, do the powers in this world not get some- thing behind their brains to ask the question “Why are so many arma- ments made and set to countries who think nothing about using Continued on Page A21 CREAIVE INTERIORS ee Let me Help You Create an Atmosphere You Feel at Home In!
