Election signs will be curbed Controls on election signs were backed Monday by North Saanich planning, zoning and parks com- mittee. Staff were directed to draft a bylaw which would allow election signs On private property with the Owner's permission, on the munic- ipal boulevard in front of private property but only with the permis- sion of the adjoining property owner, and on boulevards fronting ‘undeveloped municipal property. Signs will not be allowed on boulevards fronting any municipal buildings, including municipal hall. : Standard sizes for signs will be established and a maximum height determined. Mayor Linda Michaluk sug- gested any candidates with left- over signs may want to measure them and get the measurements into municipal staff before the bylaw is drafted, so those signs can be re-used. Municipal administrator Ron O’Genski agreed, noting North Saanich backs recycling. The maximum height should be determined by safety requirements, to ensure traffic views are not blocked, Michaluk added. Signs should not be posted until the candidate has filed nomination papers and must be removed within three days after the elec- tion. Ald. Dee Bailin thought people should be reminded not to place signs on B.C. Hydro posts or on mailboxes.
