Revitalization costs increase The cost of revitalizing Sidney’s downtown has increased signifi- cantly — to $1.137 million from the last estimate of $971,000, council heard Monday. That's because a block of Fifth Street between Beacon and Bevan avenues is now in the revitalization area, Feb. 28 minutes of the com- mittee say. Ald. John Calder suggested a _ “regular taxpayer” sit on the com=- “mittee, because one member is away on holiday. “Thirty per cent of the cost of the upgrading work is coming Bom the regular taxpayer,” he said. Others around the table said that would require a change in the committee’s agreed-upon struc- ture. * KK Sidney council on Monday endorsed a fledgling regional traf- fic safety commission, although ~ one aldermen wasn’t too impressed with its annual report. Said Ald. Herb Addison: “I don’t recall it was a great report. Maybe that’s because it was the first year. “Tt was not particularly compre- hensive in my view.” Mayor Norma Sealey, who represents the Capital Regional District on the committee, said the need for the committee’s work is essential to the Peninsula. Items stolen from unlocked vehicles - Two unlocked vehicles were entered and valuables stolen between March 17-19, Central Saanich police said. A purse was stolen from under the seat of a car parked on Norman Lane between 2 p.m. March 17 and 8 a.m. March 18. The purse contained an eel-skin wallet with credit cards and mon- ey. A wallet with $50 cash and credit cards was taken from an unlocked vehicle parked on Hard- ing Lane March 17-19. “People are victimizing vehicles for anything they can get,” deputy police Chief George Lawson said. “It’s probably one of the most major problems in Greater Victor- ia right now.” The committee of CRD, ICBC, police and Highways representa- tives is “the first of its kind in the. province,” she said. “It’s setting the pace, finding its way.” Sealey said: “I don’t think we can afford not to be involved. It’s involved in intersection safety, pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, Counter Attack, Walker Alert. “T would urge most strongly that we provide our support.” The CRD provides $40,000, “a small portion of the funding,” Sealey said. Sidney’s share will be included within the annual CRD requisi- tion. KK x A resident is urging Sidney council to go beyond recycling in efforts to help the environment. Chapeskie suggested a town composting system. : Mayor Norma Sealey said Mon- day the CRD’s environmental committee is looking into com- posting, possibly at the regional level. “There are just so many envir- onmental problems to be resolved that they have to go on a pnority list, and we work our way through them,” Sealey said. “oe oe Ae The Town of Sidney will kick in $6,000 towards labor and fire- works costs for the annual Sidney Days celebration. Sidney Days, tying in with Can- ada Day, runs June 30 to July 2. But the jazz festival has moved its events to Sept. 7, 8.and 9, a letter from the Peninsula Celebrations Society says. Council maintains that helping out Sidney Days isn’t a contraven- tion of its no-grants policy. The committee works on behalf of the town, Mayor Norma Sealey said. “We have gotten off lightly” because of the volunteer machine behind Sidney Days, she said. Ald.Herb Addison asked whether the jazz festival will approach council separately, because of its date change, “I guess we'll find that out,” Sealey said.
