TheReview Wednesday, March 28,1990 — All Car is no hotel room His car is no place to sleep off alcohol, a 64-year-old Saanichton man learned in provincial court Thursday. Edwin Eade pleaded guilty to having care and control of a vehi- cle while intoxicated and was fined $300 by Judge Stephen Denroche. Although the incident was Eade’s fifth impaired driving charge, Denroche accepted def- ence lawyer Robert Higinbotham’s explanation that Eade had not Higinbotham said Eade refused to take the breathalyzer test as he did not believe he had committed an offence. Eade tried to get a room at two local hotels before trying to sleep in his car, Higinbo- tham said. The man only started the car to provide heat, he added. Eade is married, has been retired for three years and has reduced his drinking, Higinbotham said. ‘1 don’t know how many chances you expect fo have buf you're fast running out of them’ -Judge Denroche intended to drive the car. Denroche also suspended the man’s licence for a year. Eade was found by police sleep- ing in his car, with the motor running, in the Sidney Travelodge parking lot at 5:30 a.m. July 9, Crown: counsel Edward Ormheim said. Eade was in the driver’s seat and appeared intoxicated, so he was taken to the Sidney detachment for a breathalyzer test, Ormheim explained. Denroche suggested Eade con- sider not drinking at all, given his four previous convictions for impaired driving. “Tf you are convicted again, you are not likely to be going home to your wife for quite a while,” the judge said. He placed Eade on probation for nine months and directed him to accept counselling as ordered by a probation officer. But Judge Stephen Denroche didn’t want an 18-year-old Sidney youth to lose his job, he said in Sidney provincial court Thursday. He fined him $150 on mischief and possession of burglary tools charges. And he ordered the youth to make $50 restitution towards replacing a truck’s broken window. Denroche also fined the youth $25 and $75 on two charges of breaching probation. Crown counsel Edward Orm- heim said a witness called Sidney RCMP shortly before 12 midnight Dec. 13, reporting two males had followed a vehicle into a secured underground parking lot. Police searched the parking lot and found two youths hiding inside a Ford Bronco. The passen- ger window was smashed and burglary tools were found on the front seat of the truck. Damage to the vehicle was $100. The other youth was fined $150 and ordered to pay $50 restitution, Ormheim said. The breaches of probation occurred Feb. 3, when police found the youth walking on Resthaven Drive at 6 a.m. and on March 1, when police spotted him in a local pub just after midnight. Under a probation order, the youth is under a curfew between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. Defence lawyer Mayland McKimm said his client had gone for a walk Feb. 3 after a quarrel with his girlfriend and went to the pub March 1 to talk to a friend. The youth has a job, has done some volunteer work in the com- munity and has helped some friends obtain jobs, McKimm said. Pet sitting: live in or regular visits. Municipal Engineer | By Echo Eburne FOOD FROM THE OCEAN This week’s review covers three books that have been fixtures in our home ever since my son became aware that there were fish to be caught just off the shore. The books no longer have smooth, clean covers or pages. They have the look of being well used, much loved and having travelled a great deal. The first two books are from the B.C. Outdoors Saltaire Series. “How To Catch Shellfish“ by Charles White is an informative little book that covers all the basic facts that you need to know to go after shellfish. Equipment recommendations, techniques of catching and cleaning, when not to eat certain shellfish, plus which parts are edible are conveyed to readers in an easily understood form with a good dose of humor included. White has also included regulations from B.C. and Washington state. “Bucktails and Hoochies” by Bruce Colegrave and Jack Gaunt offers expert advice to catch salmon using the above mentioned equipment. Hoochies have been used for years by commercial trollers with a great deal of success. Another book by Charles White and guest authors, ‘How To Catch Salmon” gives readers more advanced techniques, covering down- riggers, mooching, river mouth fishing and much more. All three books are easily understood with illustrations done by Nelson Dewey. The two books from the Saltaire series can be enjoyed by the younger fisherman just starting out, as well as the more experienced fisherman. B:C.
