Finally, action from commission Recent mail response confirmed the use of drugs in harness racing will not be condoned by concemed and infuriated fans. Thanks for standing up to your genuine beliefs and taking the time to write. For those who meant to write but didn’t find the time, there’s good news — better late than never counts, not like when you're at the track’s betting windows. I’ll be happy to accept tardy letters because your opinion can make a difference. _ I’m still asking questions of the B.C. Racing Commission and many of them have been posed by readers. The Island representative of the B.C. Stan- dardbred Association, Ed Bolan confirmed for me that Hudon withdrew his appeal last December of a fine Jevied in regards to an Oct. 23 charge. Action on the latest use of banned drugs may not be far away. Finally, we have a full board sitting on the B-C. Racing Commission. Former attorney general Robert Bonner was named chairman of the commission by Solicitor General Russ Fraser Bonner told The Review last week that matters before the commission, like the Hudon appeal, can’t be discussed with outside parties, like me. He also said, Friday, that all matters which require commission attention will be cleaned up within the next ten days. That’s welcome news and let’s hope we can look forward to a just decision by a new commission. Also appointed to the commission are James Heaney, partner in an accounting firm, James Forsythe, president of an investment firm, along with owner, trainer and breeder Albert Basile. Gordon Davis remains in his post as a commis- sioner while former commissioner-secretary Robert Collis moves to the executive director post. Congratulations to the appointees and I sincere- ly hope you are aware of the expectations the general public have and that the skills and competency that led to your appointments will be a benefit to the horse racing industry. On a lighter note, Mother Nature dealt us some abusive weather but over 60 Sandown Racing Club members attended the last meeting for the election of a new executive. Considering member- ship over 200, the weather and the in-town location, it was a great tumout. Maurice Hale was re-elected as president and Ed Bolan, no stranger to the track and an able man, was elected to fill the vice president’s chair. Like the ever-expanding club, the list of directors grew to eight positions. Impressive is the word that comes to mind about all appointed and the club members attending. If you are already a member or want to become one, show up at the next club meeting, Tuesday, April 10 at Sandown Harness. Everyone’s wel- come and I’m sure you'll find it interesting and enjoyable, you can bet on it. TheReview Wednesday, March 21,1990 — B7 COMMERCIAL INSURANCE aT) Il IL 1 ai SEABOARD PROPERTIES LID.
