News REJECTED Continued from Page B1 with Greenpeace. “They sprayed an American warship, and a judge in Vancouver gave them a discharge.” Addison said aldermen aren’t elected to represent the disarma- ment group. “I have no problem with what they’re doing. I do have a problem with the manner in which they do it,” Addison said. Ald. John Calder said the march attracts 5-6,000 people, from all sectors of society and across the political spectrum. “They are not anarchists. I don’t think you mean’t what you said; I hope you didn’t mean what you said,” Calder said. Addison said Feb. 26 that some members of the group probably withhold taxes because of defence spending, which he classed “anarchistic.”” Funeral services legislation favored New legislation that bans phone soliciting in the B.C. cemetery and funeral service professions is wel- comed by a local director. Said Bill Elsom of Hayward Funeral Service of Sidney, “I’m very pleased this has happened.” Phone and door-to-door solicit- ing had “painted us all with the same brush,” Elsom said. “I was never for it.” The Cemetery and Funeral Ser- vices Act also has the endorse- ment of the B.C. Funeral Associa- tion, which worked closely with the Ministry of Labor and Con- sumer Services. “We applaud the new act who- leheartedly,” a new release quotes president Doug Sharpe as saying, “This association has been work- ing with the government for more than 20 yeas to replace the outdat- ed legislation. “This new act effectively bans _ telephone and door-to-door solici- tation, both areas we have lobbied against for years.” Insurance plans that pay for funeral expenses can’t be sold door-to-door or over the phone either. “We feel telephone solicitation is an unnecessary intrusion and distressing to those who have just suffered a bereavement or illness. Through this legislation, the gov- emment has demonstrated its sup- port for the rights of the consumer and the professionalism of funeral service,’ Sharpe said. Elsom said a funeral service can reach the public without intruding. SALES TAX CREDIT You may be eligible for the Federal Sales Tax Credit this year. As we grow older we attend more funerals. These are times when we soberly consider our own destiny. While we pay our respects to our friend our inner thought is “what do we see here? Our loved! one lies cold § and lifeless, the pastor is speak- ing, sometimes reading from the Bible. Very often his words go unheededias we think — tomor- row this could be me. What is death? The problem is that nearly every preacher has a different point of view. In our confusion we might dismiss the thought of death. What is usual- ly expressed is that our friend has “passed on”? Meaning, in most cases that the journey in this life has ceased, but the dead one is continuing oni into some other existence to some other place. This infers that de- ath really is not death, but a change. Most often the pastor will say that he “is gone to be. with the Lord;” which indicates there is an immortal spark that goes somewhere else. So what does the Bible say? In the first place Gen. 2:7 says “And the Lord God formed man out of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.” So then in the rest of the record this living soul (man) is put on trial. If you disobey my command, God is saying “dieing thou shalt die”. To disobey Gods law would bring death, Paul says “the wag- es of sin is death. So death came because of sin. To Adam ; God said, “Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. No mention of man “passing on”, just back to the dust of the earth. Is this the end then? By no means. The Bible gives the answer. Jesus’ friend Lazarus was dead. Jesus said he was (Luke 11-14) “Jesus said plainly, Lazarus is dead.” No mention of “passing on”. But this is he said in verse 11 “Our friend Lazarus slee- peth”. There we have it, asleep in the grave. Further Jesus said, verse 23 “Thy brother shall rise again.” In this situation Jesus reveals the real truth. In verse 25 “| AM THE RESURREG- TION AND THE LIFE.” Plainly the only hope we have beyond ;, the grave is a resurrection. Da- niel 2:2 says “Many of them that SLEEP in the dust of the earth shall awake.” So what Christ said of Lazarus is true. “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth. | go to awake him out of sleep.” This is the real hope. It follows then that the return of Christ will bring all the sleeping dead out of the graves, and then reward those faithful with eter- nal life, not in heaven but on earth.
