Most important in deliberations on just what kind of garden is desired, are the gardener(s)’ thoughts on what type of plants are preferred. For example, evergreens (pines, spruce, junipers) provide year round color and iitcrest vs. deciduous trees and. shrubs (maples, poplars, lilacs) which = have a major presence realiy only during the spring, summer and fall. Obtaining nursery catalogues now and browsing through them is a good way of making up your own mind as to your likes and dislikes. These questions may well require some thought involving at least two members of most fami- lies, and if you are ready with the answers now, you'll be well on your way to helping a garden centre designer plan a practical garden design just for your family. Waich out for the gypsy moth See ce Se Ae Aa an Agriculture Canada wants you to keep an eye out for the gypsy moth, the enemy of some 500 different species of host plants. The moth has been recovered for the first. time on the -Saanich Peninsula. Five moths were trapped at several sites, from just north of Brentwood Bay to just south of the airport. Previously, gypsy moths have been trapped near Esquimalt,-and in- Parksville, Comox, SS and Kelowna. - This European insect was first’ : cntroduced to North America near Boston-in 1869: Jt is now estab- lished through much of the north- eastern U.S. and adjacent areas of - Canada, where thousands of hec- tares of hardwood forests are defol- lated every year. Eggs are laid in August and hatch the following spring. Larvae are voracious feeders and, if in an epidemic, can completely defoliate a host tree. Agriculture Canada has for sev- eral years co-ordinated a gypsy - moth trapping program: A triangu- lar stick trap baited with a phero- mone — a chemical given off by the female to attract the male moth — is used to locate areas where the gypsy moth has inadvertently been introduced. Caterpillar: Dark brown cov- ered with tufts of hairs, some of which are short and stiff, others quite Jong and thin. Young cater- pillars are black, very hairy and diffeult to recognize, unless found near a tan-colored egg mass. - Distinguishing features appear = on the. back in’ early June when _ Caterpillars are about 25 ‘em: long “= five: pairs of:blue spots followed by. Six pairs -of brick= red spots. . Starting in June they feed only a at -night and descend trees each day to seek shade in protected places on the trunk and in litter. Moth: Male and female moths look and behave quite differently. The fast-flying male has brown wings heavily streaked with black, and characteristic feather-like antennae. The much larger female is una- ble to fly and has white wings with brown steaks. Females attract males by emitting a pheromone.
