It’s Spring * Photosynthesis explained Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make food. photo- synthesis means “putting together with light.” In green plants, sunlight cap- tured by chlorophyll enables car- bon dioxide from the air to unite with water and minerals from the soil and create its own food. This process also releases oxygen into the air. Most photosynthesis takes place in small bodies called chloroplasts within the cells of plant leaves. These chloroplasts contain chloro- phyll, which absorbs sunlight. Energy from the sun splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxy- gen. The hydrogen joins with car- bon from the carbon dioxide to produce sugar. The sugar helps a plant make the fat, protein, starch, vitamins, and other materials that it needs to survive. Some plants, called parasites and saprophytes, cannot produce their own food. They must rely on outside sources for their food. Parasites grow as fast as fungi on many plants, including apples, potatoes, and tomatoes. Saprophytes, includ- ing mushrooms, molds and mil- dew, live on decaying plants and animals. 53 Plants also play an important part in conservation, the protection of soil, water, wildlife, and other natural resources. Energy from the sun splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen For instance, plants help keep _ the soil from being blewn away by the wind, or washed away by the water. Nature’s magical cycle All living things — plants and animals — are linked by the cycle of nature. This natural process gives humans oxygen to breathe, food to eat, and heat to keep warm. The sun provides the energy that runs the cycle. Plants use sunlight to make their own food, and they give off oxy- gen during the process. Humans and animals eat the plants and breathe in the oxygen. In turn, they both breathe out carbon dioxide. Plants combine the carbon dioxide with energy from sunlight, and water, and minerals from the soil to make more food. After plants and animals die, they begin to decay. The rotting process returns minerals to the soil, where plants can again use them. pag hate An artichoke lip A single plant or group of two or three artichoke plants look very attractive in a herbaceious border and to the front of a shrub border. Remember, they grow quite high — three to four feet.
