Several teams are already past the initial practice stage and have already played some exhibition games while others are looking forward to pre-season exhibtion tournaments. League action officially begins April 7 but people can leave the ball and glove in the car and haul out the shovel and wheelbarrow. Soon to become a tradition, the league is holding its annual work party with organizers gathering at Sanscha Park to begin some major projects. “We want to remove all the sod from the infield and replace it with top soil, then smooth it all out,” league secretary Shaqnnon Noyce said. A sprinkler system needs repair and the league also wants to build more and better bleachers. Pre- season work is also required on other league diamonds — at John Road, Wain Road and Panorama. A new executive was elected to oversee the two divisions of 11 teams, at a recent organizational meeting. Paul Noyce was re-elected as Recreation Rippers fight for berth In district semi-final registration increasing Use of the Panorama Leisure Centre in North Saanich is increasing rapidly, with 950 peo- ple registering for spring programs over the first two days of registra- tion. Revenue is up 44 per cent from last year’s spring program. Registration for North Saanich and Sidney residents started Satur- day with residents of other areas registering starting Sunday. The first registrants were lining up at the centre by 7 a.m. Saturday. Swimming lessons, gymnastics, tot soccer and pre-school pro- grams were the most popular of the 352 programs offered over the spring session. Peninsula Recreation Commis- sion chairman Brian Sibley said the commission set aside $10,000 in the 1990 budget for planning a possible expansion of the Pano- rama Centre. However no planning will be done until Central Saanich decides whether to build a recreation centre in that municipality, Sibley said. Although Central Saanich does ’ not contribute to the Panorama Centre operating costs, many users of the centre live in that munici- pality. If Central Saanich builds a recreation centre, the Panorama Centre may lose, those users. “So much depends on Central Saanich,” Sibley said. Snes AMIR SOCWTY. SOIT. The Peninsula Realty World Rippers defeated Prospect Lake Copley Bros. 6-1 to reach the semi-final round in Division 8 District soccer action, Saturday. Despite dominating play during the first half, the Rippers fell behind 1-0 when a Prospect Lake player scored on a breakaway, shooting the ball just out of reach of goalie Jeff McDonough, team spokesman David Main said. Eight minutes into the second half Andrew Hill tallied Rippers first marker after getting the ball from midfielder John Main. Minutes later Main made a long cross field pass to Regan Daley who struck the go-ahead goal ona strong individual effort. Tyler Walker’s unselfish play at centre forward resulted in the third Ripper goal. After penetrating the opposition defenses he cleverly passed the ball off to Hill, who put it in the net. Midfielder Ben McKinnon and centre defense Joel Woods were particularly aggressive and their play was instrumental in contain- ing Prospect Lake to their own end of the field throughout the second half of the game. Goalie Jason Wiles and defen- ders Richie Primrose, Michael John Vincent and Sean Ponsford handled the ball well on the few occasions they were called on in the second half. Before the game was over lef- twinger Regan Daley scored two more goals as the Prospect Lake defense was completely broken down by continual pressure from Ripper forwards Daley, Walker and Hill. In the final moments of the game Chris Sterling, on a deter- mined run, took the ball well into the penalty box of the Prospect Lake team. Although he was stopped, Misha Christian was in the right position to gather up the loose ball and kick it into the net for his first goal of the season.
