ape i TheReview Wednesday, March 14,1990 — jg |, This week I took my own advice, for once, and really shifted into high gear, “himself and I made a hasty trip up to Butler Brothers in Keating and got two small garbage pails of washed sand which I prefer to use for rooting cuttings, and I now have about 50 geraniums cuttings, a couple dozen fibrous begonia, some ivy geraniums, and a few felicia (for baskets). Tomorrow, with any luck - I hope to do a few more cuttings. Hopefully, as I am certainly late in getting these things done, they will root in a hurry. I have them over the heating cable in the greenhouse, covered with a large plastic tent. I also planted three baby orchid off-shoots, bought in Hawaii. These were packaged and passed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for - export, so there was no problem when we came through Canadian Customs. We also brought back two packages of Maui onion seed, one we have given away, and after planting a dozen seeds from package number 2, it will go as well. It is getting a bit late to plant onion seed, but better planted than sitting in its package which’ Says on the label, “Good until July 1990.” I made a trip to a garden centre and bought sweetpea seeds, onion sets, green pea seed, sugar pea seed, spinach, and some tomato sced. I put two dozen sweetpea seeds in a piece of wet paper towelling in a plastic bag, over heat, to pre-sprout only three days ago, and already some of the fat seeds have split and produced roots. Planting each one in an individual pot is a job for tomorrow, for sure, or I’ll end up (as has happened too often before) with a mass of tangled When the garden gets growing roots, cursing myself for being so slack, We also made a quick trip to Sleggs to pick up a roll of two-ml plastic vapor barmier, which is very cheap, to be used to cover the raised beds, after first spreading several layers of newspaper to cut off the light, and kill the few remaining bits of rye grass not quite tured’ under. In about ten days we'll remove the plastic, dig in the newspapers, rake the beds, and plant the peas and the spinach, and probably a few sprouted carly potatoes. ‘Then we’ll recover the beds with the plastic and leave it on until the seedlings appear. At this time it would have to be either removed or raised so that it won’t rest on your sprouts. If you could Support it on arched wires you’d then be growing under a cloche, which would give you a much earlier crop. If the weather warms up very much I think I’d be tempted to leave it off. . . no point in cooking things before they ripen! John Verhagen, a long-time friend of ours, for whom I worked some years ago, called to ask if I would add something really worthwhile to this column. His sons are members of the Saanich 4-H Club, and this particular club wants to GIVE away bags of well-rotted cow manure, particularly to seniors who might otherwise find it difficult to obtain any of this valuable commodity. These 4-H members will bag and deliver manure free, but a small donation would, I’m sure, be much appreci- ated. There has be to a limit of five bags delivered to any one address, but what a generous offer! To order your bags of the good stuff, please call Fran Kennedy at 652-0897. This kind of behavior really renews a fella’s faith in the goodness of human nature, doesn’t it?
