Community STARS Continued from Page B1 amatcur astronomy. The most recent, The Guide to Amateur Astronomy, was published in 1988 by Cambridge University Press. In the book, written with fellow amateur astronomer Philip Teece, he shares experience gleaned over three decades of observing and photographing space. Newton combined an existing interest in photography with a new hobby, astronomy, after he received a smal] telescope for Christmas when he was 12 years old. “1 moved straight into astro- photography, mainly because my friends at school wouldn’t believe what I claimed to see in the telescope,” he explained in a press release. A newspaper route helped him pay for his first pieces of equip- ment. At 23 he made his first tele- scope, measuring 25 cm. A decade later he built a 40-cm telescope, followed by a 50-cm telescope. Just over a year ago he finished his most recent telescope, a 63-cm reflector mounted on a trailer. “The views through it are abso- lutely incredible,” he says. “I can see the spiral arms in many galax- ies.” Much of his equipment is home- made. Often he will get home from his job as a department store manager, observe all night if the weather is clear, go to work the next day and sleep the following evening. “I can be dead tired after observing but what it does to you psychologically is indescribable. He has worked with the Domin- ion Astrophysical Observatory and the University of Victoria. In Hawaii, the University of Hawaii allowed him two nights observing through its 60 cm telescope on Mauna Kea. “AS soon as I see a still, dark night developing, my heart starts pounding and I start thinking, Wow, another night to get out and search the universe,’ Newton says.
