News Caveliey wants to help dismanile the Vander Zalm ‘business club’ North Saanich Ald. Don Caver- ley, 45, made it official last week — he hopes to represent the New Democrats against a provincial government that’s become the private club of Big Business.” Caverley is one of three people so far known to be seeking the NDP nomination for the new Saa- nich North and the Islands consti- # tency. The professional social worker says in a-press release: “British Columbians want a government that can create a comprehensive plan for the future of the province that will take us through the °90s, into the 21st century and beyond. “We need leadership that can develop sound, flexible policies and programs appropniate for all sectors of society, because provin- ciall wealth and resources are for the benefit of all citizens, not the privileged few.” ra Premier Bill Vander Zalm is “a one-man show” who needs to be replaced, Caverley said. The Socreds under Vander Zalm have instituted “insensitive pro- grams” that have resulted in “one of the most disliked, regressive and negative governments in our history. “This atmosphere of distrust and uncertainty is preventing our province from achieving its full potential.” Also seeking the nomination are poet Elizabeth Woods and retired forester Edo Nyland. Caverley, like the other two, counts the environment as one of his priorities. A founding member of Save Saanich Peninsula Communities, Caverley calls for a strengthened Islands Trust and agricultural land reserve, for the preservation of Saanich Inlet, and for a look at alternative transportation in the area Peninsula. Caverley has been an alderman and a St. Andrew’s Regional High School trustee since 1987. He and his family have lived in North Saanich for nine years. He received his bachelor of arts degree in sociology and psycholo- gy at Laurentian University, before coming west in 1969 to work at Tranquille hospital. He received his master’s degree in social work from UBC.
