se by Glenn Werkman The Review. The Peninsula Eagles Junior B hockey club seems to have undere- stimated its competition. In the first game of a best-of- nine series to determine the South Island Junior Championship, the Eagles blew a 4-1 first period lead in front of a hometown crowd, losing 8-5 after the Kerry Park Islanders scored three unanswered goals. One would have thought that performance would inspire some- thing better in Game 2. Instead, the Eagles barely man- aged a 5-4 overtime win in Kerry Park Saturday night. “T’ve been telling our guys ever since Christmas that Kerry Park will give us trouble if we don’t play them hard,” coach Mike Mowat said. “They didn’t believe me and now we're in a dog fight. “Now Kerry Park is playing with confidence. They think they can win this series,’ Mowat said. During the regular season the Islanders usually had a decent bench of players but never a full roster — tapping all the talent at their disposal. Now, it’s playoff time and the team is playing for all the marbles. PILE-UP AT center ice resulted in no injuries but penalties were awarded during recent junior hoc- key action. Right winger Joan McKimm rushed in on net and took a shot at a tough angle to score and tie it up midway through the second half. “Everyone was anxious to play after waiting so long,” a team spokesman said. In Division 2, the Hotel Sidney Hobbits also jumped into Van- couver Island women’s field hoc- key action Saturday at UVic. Against the Cardinals, the Hob- bits took a goal from Heather Dobbs to equal a single scored by the Cardinals, and take a 1-1 tie. Both teams had a bye last week- end as the women’s masters teams took to the only fields in sufficient shape for play. Action is expected to resume next weekend.
