Beware the Ides... udging from information supplied by the Victoria Police Department it’s not just the Ides of March we should be wary of, like Julius Caesar, when it comes to knives. Knives are an every-day concern to members of local police forces. While in last week’s Top Story, we told you about guns and the regulations concerning them, it’s knives that present the greater hazard on local streets and bars. é People are arming themselves with knives of all descriptions, at an alarming rate. A large box or recently-confiscated knives was produced for a reporter in the property room at Victoria Police headquarters. It contained a chilling array of weapons from the common kitchen variety to sleek commando models. From stilettos to machettes - police are seizing the weapons in increasing numbers from street people, desperados and dope fiends. Superintendent Doug Richardson said the main weapon of concern for his department is knives. In 1989 Victoria Police investigated 137 cases involving weapons, an increase of 25 per cent from 1988. Of those weapons cases, 46 per cent involved knives. Only 28 per cent involved guns. . : Robberies were up 23 per cent in 1989. Victoria Police investigated 178 cases and of those, 24 involved the use of a knife and only fiveinvolved the use of a gun. Sixteeen of those robberies were commited using the “old hand in the pocket trick” to: simulate a gun. GET x, uS 2 SF MICHELIN XA4 The truly durable, truly all-season radial.
