Local dancer Lindsay Davis, chosen as one of the 132 dancers in the closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand, said the similarities between the dancers were more striking than the differences. “We all expected everybody to be very different because they were all from different places — and they were different — but mostly we were all the same. “We laughed at the same jokes, we ail complained about the long hours of rehearsal and the heat. Everyone had a lot in common,” Davis: said. The Commonwealth Youth, six young people from each of 22 countries, were sponsored by World Vision to draw attention to the eight million children in the Commonwealth’s developing countries who are struggling for survival. The 132 young people were joined by 132 young New Zealan- ders in the Feb. 3 closing ceremo- nies performance. For the perform- ance, the Canadian group wore white leotards topped by a red swirling outfit emblazoned with a white maple leaf. Also in the Commonwealth Youth were young people from Australia, Bangladesh, Britain, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Tanzania, Tonga, Uganda, Vanuatu, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Davis’ closest friends in the group were a girl from Uganda and boy from the Solomon Islands. After the Commonwealth Games performance, the entire group went on a nine-concert tour of New Zealand from Feb. 5 to Feb. 18. Entitled Harambee Har- ambee, a Swahili term meaning meeting together for a purpose, the concert featured the unique songs and dances from each of the represented countries. The six Canadians danced to music especially written by Valdy. Davis said she got to know CANADIAN-CLAD in red and white are the six dan- cers from the Island who participated in the closing ceremonies of the Com- monwealth Games in New Zealand, Performing with the World Vision Commonwealth Youth was local dancer Lindsay Davis (front row, far left) who recently returned from New Zealand. many of the other young people well during the rchearsals and performances. Almost all of them spoke English, she found. “We all became like a big family.” Through the program, World Vision New Zealand raised $150,000 for the World Vision Child Survival Program. In Can- ada, over $300,000 has been Taised, in a campaign that will continue until the 1994 Common- wealth Games in Victoria. Davis would like to see the program continue at the next Com- monwealth Games. Mecting the other young people was the most exciting part of the trip, she said. “It didn’t matter where it was, it was getting all those people together.” The chance to mect so many people from different countries even overshadowed her meeting with Prince Edward. “He seemed kind of like a normal guy. I expected him to be really snotty and arrogant and he wasn't, he was just a natural guy, seemed very relaxed,” Davis said. He asked the dancers to explain the Commonwealth Youth pro- gram and to describe their cos- tumes, so he could pick them out in the closing ceremony. Davis is still writing to some of the young people she met and hopes to visit many other coun- tries. In the meantime she is catching up on her grade 11 school work at Parkland Secondary and preparing to compete in the upcoming Vic- toria Music Festival. “Tm still dancing, more than ever,” she said. ale RANT FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH , OVER 55 SPECIALS SUN.-THURS. — 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. CHOICE OF SOUP OR SALAD 6 OZ.
