Such homemade weapons are considered pro- hibited weapons. Once a rifle or shotgun is less than 660 ml long or the barrel is less than 457 ml in length, it is consid- ered a prohibited weapon. Sawed off shotguns seems to be the weapon of choice for bank robbers. “It seems these things are very intimidating. If you walk into a bank and pull out a sawed off shotgun, you defin- itely get attention whereas if you have a small handgun, it may not be as noticeable and it may not be as intimidating as a sawed off shotgun that comes out from beneath an overcoat. The spread of the shot, especially if buckshot is used, means less likelihood of death, but more likelihood of being hit.” In a perfect world, nobody would need to carry a gun, not even police officers. We're a long way from that in Cana- da, says Richardson. Britain is one country where normal- ly, police officers do not bear arms. New Zealand is a simi- lar situation, however, officers assigned to special tactical squads do have weapons. “Generally speaking, the bobby on the beat is not armed in Great Britain or New Zealand. I would like to live in a society where it is not necessary for a police officer to be armed. It’s always the concern of a police officer that he might be overpowered and shot with his own weapon. That happens in many, many cases. We're not in Britain, though — we're closely locat- ed to the United States and I believe American and Canadi- an police officers are more at risk than the British bobby.” Richardson tells of a recent police honors night sponsored by the B.C. Police Commis- sion at Government House in November 1989, more than 20 police officers from throughout the province were honored for acts of bravery and outstanding service to their communities. It was in- teresting to note that not one incident involved firearms. “I accompanied an FBI agent stationed in Seattle who was present at that din- ner. He remarked to me that if that event had been held in any of the U.S. states, that probably 90 per cent would have involved firearms.” = ___ “Business Built by Referrals” We've invited the world + ut Victoria comes first.
