eee TheReview Wednesday, March 7, 1990 — Ai4 4}=} 5 Help arrives for new club house The Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Central Saanich got an ever- icreasing amount of help from the municipality in relocating to a leased house from the old fire hall on East Saanich Road. Initially, finance committee chairman Ald. Wayne Watkins suggested the club be given $3,000 to upgrade the electrical to handle safely equipment, make some renovations and build a chain-link fence. After discussion Feb. 12, the parks and recreation committee decided $4,000 would be suffi- cient to fix up the new temporary premises. Then, when the committee rec- ommendation came to council Feb. 19 it was decided that $6,000 would be made available for improvements to make the resi- dence into a temporary clubhouse for the Boys’ and Girls’ Club to Tun its programs. Parks committee chairman Ald. Wayne Hunter said concerns expressed by committee and club director Ralph Hembruff would be best met with an expenditure of $6,000. About $1,700 was needed to upgrade the clectrical system in the house in order to install emer- gency lighting, u fire alarm system and illuminated exit doors with signs. Structural changes required include installing a sccond exit, removing two walls and framing a furnace enclosure. Handrails, a sprinkler system for the furnace, new locks, new lino- leum flooring and sccuring an existing water well was also required, Hembruff said. Other arcas that needed work were being looked after by the owner and volunteer labor. “The question is, how much will anyone pul into a temporary, building,” Hembrulf asked. Ald. Wayne Watkins said the term ef the Icase is for a 24-month period and he suspects the club could be there for 24 months. Mayor Ron Cullis said: “We sold the other property for $475,000 so there should be some money there for capital costs.” Hembrulf said the owner of the house has been very co-operative and club members have been doing a lot of manual work to improve the house.
