ee et Ie sRemed, codons News | eee Review Wednesday, February 21,1990 —_ Ad e New school designed to match by Valorie Lennox The Review The new Mt. Newton Middle was designed in reverse: first the program was outlined and then the building plans drafted. Usually a school is built and programs fitted into the existing building. But the result of the reverse method is a unique school — and it’s already drawing interest from throughout the province and across Canada, said superintendent Hank Stefaniuk during an information meeting on the new school Thurs- day. Construction of the $11 million project at the Stelly’s Crossroad and Gowdy Road site is expected to start in June for completion by September 1991. The finished school will house up to 750 students in Grades 6, 7 and 8. Although the school will be large, a four-pod design will give the impression of a smaller school. Each of the three pods will have its Own identity, with washrooms, locker area, outside bicycle racks, staff work area, computer lab and science lab in addition to class- rooms, The fourth pod will house home economics, music, art, industrial AAG arts, dance and drama and an open area which may be used for per- formances or assemblies. The fourth pod will also contain a lunch area and be linked to the A MODEL SCHOOL showing the classroom and hallway design of the new Mt. Newton Middle School is examined by principal Betty Clazie. gymnasium and an auxiliary gym- nasium. The design allows community use of the facilities in the fourth pod while closing off the rest of the school. Two playing fields and parking for 90 vehicles is included on the 11 acre site. Vehicles will enter from Stelly’s Cross Road. The six classrooms in each of the three pods are linked by alcoves. The design allows for team teaching, small group instruction or a separate project area. A clear story above each of the hallways brings natural light into the classrooms. Responding to the provincial Ministry of Education’s Year 2000 plan, the pod design will accom- modate ungraded instruction. Requirements for the school were outlined by present Mt. New- ton school teachers before the new school was designed, architect Donovan Marshall said. Included in the new school is provision for the English as a programs ¢ second language, French immer- sion, special education and Native Programs already in the present school. The new school will also work with the Dunsmuir Lodge based B.C. Educational Technology Centre, reviewing educational soft- ware and interactive videos. Keven Elder, director of program , development for the district, hopes the school will incorporate tech- nology into everyday practice. Computers will be readily avail- able, with a computer lab in each pod and wiring for computers in each classroom. Plans call for 200 computers in the school. Teachers are receiving in- service training on using such technology as computers and interactive laser videos when plan- ning lessons. Instead of teaching students about computers in computer labs, Elder hopes the students will use computers as a learning tool. “We are hoping to make com- puters readily available to each classroom.” NATIONAL REAL ESTATE SERVICE Locations At last ...
