Opinion Continued from Page A8 enthusiastic orbit over! The Memorial Park Society have discussed giving the town $2 million toward the centre Gf Sans- cha is expropriated) and in retum the town proposes selling them Iroquois Park for $1. The society also requires that the proposal be Put to referendum, and that any operating “deficits” be the responsibility of the town. So the public, who have already poured approximately $6 million into the port project, could be faced with shelling out a further minimum of $4.2 million, plus Operating costs, in order to help make Sidney Pier’s present project viable. Maybe a better idea, if it’s such a no-risk project, would be for Sidney Pier to finance and run a centre itself? The Sidney Pier lease consists of the old Smitty’s marina, a marina services building, a pub, and now the indefinitely delayed third building (shops). Last summer the marina failed dismally to draw enough boaters to please the local merchants (the traffic is just not out there). All winter it has moored about a dozen local boats (as I write I can see 10). Outside the lease there are a few condos and a museum that is swallowing public money faster than the whale swallowed Jonah. What Sidney Pier is trying to tell us is that that set up is just not financially viable without more EMERGENCY ROAD SERVICE public millions to bail it out. I for one say my taxes are high enough thank you. Go and find your own financing. John Wood Sidney The pub and the club Editor: On behalf of the Prairie Inn Harriers Running Club, I wish to express our thanks for your contin- ued great coverage of our annual Central Saanich Pioneer 8K Race. However, common misconception about our club is reflected in the caption under your Jan. 31 photo- graph of Harrier David Miller. It Says the club is sponsored by a Central Saanich Pub. The Harriers Club is not related to the Prairie Inn Pub in that way, although we are pleased to acknowledge the support provided by the pub in assisting us with draw prizes for our events. The pub also has seen fit to provide funds to support some of our competitive relay teams to defray expenses. 37 §°5 eee CaN a 3 Heather Simpson on 1987 or later models l | FROM [ee ee For your readers? information, the club took its name from the local pub after being encouraged to form by the pub owner in 1979, fo whose establishment the found- ing members often retired after a vigorous training run in Central Saanich.
