They dropped a 76-70 decision to the Number 5 ranked Oak Bay Bays, Feb. 13 at home. Coming from a 35-34 halftime deficit, the Panthers knew they'd have to contain Bays’ stars Chris Whittaker and Andy Wilmott. But with just a few minutes left, Steve Lefebvre was fouled out and was forced to stop the great job he was doing checking Whittaker. “Our strategy was to keep both those guys under control,” coach Joe Milligan said. “They’re both capable of 30-point games.” Having Whittaker get loose for a couple of shots was all the Bays needed to put the game away. “In the last couple of minutes he made the difference,” Milligan said. “Jt was a tough one to lose.” Daryl Lawes Jed the scoring in that game with 23 points while Shane Ruman and Mark Bunting each scored 16. . In a later game, Thursday against Esquimalt, Bunting got really hot and scored 34 points from the floor as the Panthers outmatched their opponent 93-57. Lawes also played well, hitting for 22 points as the Panthers improved on a 49-20 half time lead. The two game set up the final _week of league play. Parkland met Belmont at home last night and meet Spectrum away Thursday. Depending on how other teams do, the Panthers want to get at Ieast one win out of the two games to set up a good berth in the Island Tournament, which starts March 1 in Courtenay. Magic Colour advances to semi-final Peninsula Magic Colour advanced into the semi-finals of the Lower Island B.C. Cup Playoffs with their second Straight win — this time a 3-1 win over Gordon Head All Sports. Wet ground conditions forced the game to be played in the rain at the all-weather field at Beacon Hill Park, Feb. 10. Magic Colour started the game Strong on offence but forwards Bill Farrant and Darrell Underwood just missed several sconng oppor- tunities early in the game. Finally, about 20 minutes into the game, nght-half Shaun Kinger- lee cleared the ball up the right side and Underwood picked it up — outrunning a defender to score On a nice shot to the left comer. Brian Timms, Magic Colour’s goalie, stopped every scoring effort that Gordon Head could muster in the first half and defen- ders Rease Larson, Jon Goulet, Bryan Terrell and Jay Loveridge played well as a unit. Magic Colour scored their second goal about half way through the second half when midfielder Gus Morris took the ball off a Gordon head forward and crossed the ball up the middle. A Gordon Head defender misp- layed the ball and midfielder Chris McDonald picked it up and scored from about 20 yards out on a hard high shot. Magic Colour let down a little after that goal and Gordon Head took advantage. The game was action packed for the last ten minutes with lots of action at both ends. Colour finally put it away after a three-on-two break by Chris Gray, McDonald and Underwood was completed by Underwood driving the ball by a startled Gordon Head keeper for his second goal of the game. Magic Colour played either Juan de Fuca or Cordova Bay in the semi-finals Saturday, top honor Peninsula Figure Skating Club athlete Matthew Baker was judged as the most artistic male skater in the Lynn Hetherington Memorial Competition at the Juan de Fuca arena Feb. 10-11. Baker was ranked first place in the pre-preliminary men’s event for skaters nine-years and older and was later awarded as the most artistic male of the competition. Other Peninsula skaters did well. Anna Birkwieser placed fourth in the pre-preliminary ladies event for athletes nine-years and older. She was among a ficld of 37 skaters from all over Vancouver Island. Birkwieser was also the winner of the most artistic prc- preliminary lady award, publicity chairman Kathy Monette said.
