Romanian relief project seeks clothing donations A Vancouver-based Romanian relief project has been brought to the Peninsula, thanks to a Bren- twood mother. Spurred by reports of over- crowded orphanages and shortages in Romania, Jaine Grundmanis has joined churches and groups in Vancouver who are collecting clothes and donations to be shipped to Romania at the end of March. She contacted the Vancouver organizers last week and offered to collect and send donations from the Peninsula to join the shipment. Stelly’s Secondary school, Brentwood Bay elementary, Durr- ance elementary and Mt. Newton Middle school will have collection boxes. Grundmanis hopes other schools will also accept the boxes. Friday she finished making sev- eral large boxes. Her children, three-year-old Juliet and six-year- old Elliot, decorated the boxes with poster paints. The couple had considered adopting a Romanian child and attended a meeting in Vancouver on the possibility, Although Grundmanis now does not think the adoptions will go ahead, she hopes the clothing collection will meet some of the desperate need in Romania. She plans to collect donations until mid-March and then send the boxes to Abbotsford in time for the scheduled container shipment at the end of the month. Donations can be dropped off in the school collection boxes or donors can call Grundmanis at 652-6028. Volunteers to help collect and pack the donations for shipping are also welcome. Grace Community Church hosts a new start service A special worship service, Cele- bration of Beginning, by Grace Community Church Feb. 11 involved local MLAs Mel Couvel- ier and Terry Huberts. Huberts read a scripture text during the service and Couvelier congratulated the new church at a reception after the service. “If the 80s was a me decade, then the 90s will be a we decade and the direction planned for this church will be in step with the coming decade,” Couvelier said. In his sermon, Pastor Stephen Swift called on church members to create a community serving church designed to meet the needs of the baby boomer generation and them children. These families account for most of the population near the Central Saanich church, Swift noted. “I was very pleased with the service. It was sincerely worship- ful and a lot of fun. Our guests were delightful, Kyla Perrin’s spe- cial music was truly moving and we had an excellent attendance,” Swift said. _ Pastor Ron Freeman of Penin- sula Alliance Church and Minis- terial Association president offered a blessing and prayer for the church at the reception. The church held its first service Oct. 1, drawing many members of its congregation from those who disagreed with recent decisions by the United Church of Canada.
