Sports pie nih asia ee « Review Wednesday, February 14,1990 — B4 GAMES CONTINGENT oF Stelly’s pair win at Commonwealth Games by Fraser Syme Special to The Review Stelly’s School students Wil- liam Morris, 14, and his cousin Ivan Morris, 17, returned last week from Auckland, New Zealand, after achieving a championship performance in canoe pulling. The pair, who are members of the Tsartlip band, were part of an 11-man crew who defeated their Kiwi hosts in the Open class, double hull sprint championship — one of the Commonwealth Games exhibition events. William Moris remembers the race with a smile. He explained: “I was really nervous. I’m the young- est member of the crew, except for Ivan and Allan Tom who’s 15. “Everyone else in the race were adults.” The race was a short sprint, only three or four minutes, “but when we were finished, the Kiwis were pretty far back. We were surprised because this is our off-season. We normally pull in the summer, so we hadn’*t had very much train- ing.” Moris added: “The other thrill was singing in the Games Closing Ceremonies. We represented the Salish tribe, and helped raise Nuu- chah-nulth carver Tim Paul’s Friendship Pole at the closing. We were all excited because the event was televised all over the world. It ' was weird to watch ourselves on T.Y. later.” The event coincided with a sim- ilar raising of Cicero August’s Knowledge Totem on the lawn of the Victoria Legislature, so the event has added significance for the Morris family, who live in Brentwood Bay. Ivan’s father, Wayne Morris, car- ried the Canadian Banner in the Opening Ceremony, an added thrill for the young pair. Ivan Mortis says the pole raising was a highlight. “I was proud to be Salish. Most people think the Haida are the best artists. The pole we raised was a great moment for Games,” said Ivan. “We saw some boxing, and met Canadian silver medalist Geronimo Bie. We stayed at the Auckland Technical Insti- tute, and the manager’s daughter was gold medal gymnastics star Nikki Jenkins. We also had a chance to meet some of the native New Zealanders, the Maori. We had dinner in their church, and tried mussels for the first time.” William said: “They think the sweet potato is the greatest vegeta- ble. They even started wars over gardens growing them. They put different kinds of fish on their pizzas .. . gross! It was interesting, but given the choice, I ate at McDonald’s.” As to what’s coming next in their careers as Commonwealth Games champions, William rolled his eyes and said: “Reality. We missed three weeks of school, so schoolwork is pretty important. The next canoeing goal is tre Indigenous Games in Edmonton this June. The Commonwealth Games Committee will be there watching, and it would be awe- some if canoe pulling was included in the Victoria Games.” ALL SMILES back at home are William Morris, (left) and cousin Ivan Morris, who just returned from the Com- monwealih Games in Auckland. | Blueprint Services Make Us Your - “One Stop” Press Center s Stationery e Catalogs Business Forms © Envelopes * Announcements e Advertising | 6562514 1 #4-10025 Galaran Road, Sidney, B.C.
