_ TheReview _ Wednesday, January 31,1990 — B6 Panthers prepare to pounce “+ The Parkland Panthers AAA senior boys basketball team came back from a 13-point first-quarter deficit to defeat Mt. Doug by eight points in Lower Island High School league action last week. ~ We were playing really poorly and Mt. Doug just kept chipping away,” coach Joe Milligan said. “We couldn’t seem to halt the rather slow slide.” A locker room lecture at half time must have inspired the Panthers — they came out and scored 20 unanswered points at the beginning of the third quarter. “Within two minutes we were back up by two points and we just kept going,” Milligan said. ‘““We were up by 18 at the end of the third quarter and we ended up winning by a fair margin.” Shane Ruman was the top scorer for the Panthers with a Steady 19 points in the last league game (Jan. 20) before the pressures of exam week Set in. ~Mt. Doug is always a good team because they’re the biggest school in Greater Victoria,” Milli- gan said. “Anytime we play them we know it’s going to be a good game.” The slow start left the Panthers down by 13 points at the start of the second quarter but the strong third-quarter performance made the difference in a 69-51 victory. Milligan was pleased with his players’ second half show because they held Mt. Doug to 22 points in two quarters — including three points from a desperation three- pointer in the final seconds. “Holding Mt. Doug to 51 points was pretty good going — it was a lot more satisfying victory than the week before,” Milligan said. “We wanted to hold Belmont to 60 but they got 97.” This afternoon at 5:15 p.m. the Panthers will play at home for the first time since New Year’s Day. The team meets the Number 8-ranked AA Wellington team from Nanaimo in an exhibition match — designed to prepare play- ers for a top-ranked 1/6-team tour- Nament this weekend.
