Living Summer Sandown season on track, commission says by Glenn Werkman The Review The summer standardbred horse racing season at Sandown will go ahead as usual this year, despite an application by the B.C. Standardbred Association, B.C. Racing Commission commis- sioner-secretary Bob Collis said Monday. Responding to rumors that Sandown won't open for live racing this spring, Collis replied;: “I don’t think there’s going to be any truth to that this year.” Collis said standardbred owners and trainers find it expensive to come to the Island, prompting the association’s application to stay on the Lower Mainland. “Tnstead of the 51 days on the Island they would have 51 days at Cloverdale to cut down on expenses,” Collis said. Items being considered by the racing commission include possible impact on Exhibition Park and the success of a pending provincial cabinet decision regarding tele-theater betting. “I would be very surprised if racing didn’t go on at Sandown this summer,” Collis said. The standardbred season at the North Saanich raceway typically runs three days a week from the Victoria Day long weekend in May until the Labor Day long weekend in September. “The owners and trainers want to change it,* Collis said. “They think it’s too costly.” He said passage of legislation allowing tele-theatre betting “was the condition to even consider moving standardbreds off the Island.” About 350-400 horses are stabled at Sandown during the racing season, he said. Tele-theatre betting would allow racing fans to sit in a theater in downtown Victoria and wager on horse races year-around broadcast from various locations. “Enabling legislation is only part way through with respect to tele-theater betting,” Collis said. Sandown currently features inter-track wagering three days a week on races broadcast live from Cloverdale. Get sight of park site, Bailin says Council should take a close look at a Clayton Road site before choosing a walkway over a park, North Saanich Ald. Dee Bailin said Jan. 22. The parks commission recom- mended the one-fifth acre of dedi- cated parkland from a subdivision off Clayton Road be used for a trail towards Wain Road. The commission hopes the trail would be extended through to Wain Road following negotiation with intervening property owners. Bailin suggested a small passive park instead of trail. ALD. DEE BAILIN “Tt would be a small park but it is a lovely treed area,” she told the council committee meeting. The planning, zoning and parks committee recommended an on- site visit to council before any decision is made on the park property.
