N ews TheReview Wednesday, January 31,1990 — Aj4 Public response Highways proposes Beacon divider *-) fo rec facility study ouistanding, planner says Public response to a questionnaire circulated to gather informa- tion for a recreation facilities feasibility study was outstanding, Bill Webster of Professional Environmental Recreation Consult- ants said Monday. A draft report will be given to Central Saanich council in about a month, Webster said. After a random mailing of 1,000 questionnaires to residents, about 70 per cent have been retumed and more are coming in every day, Webster said. About two weeks remain for people to respond. “Interviewing community organizations has been delightful. I’m sure they’ll be looking forward to the report as well,” Webster said. The study is expected to address issues like building a recreation facility in Centennial Park and Central Saanich’s role regarding North Saanich’s Panorama Leisure Centre. Over 40 Central Saanich and Peninsula organizations were interviewed by PERC. The study will include an inventory of all areas and facilities, programs and participants, population projections and capital and operating budgets. An open community meeting is expected to be scheduled after council receives the draft report. but it’s only three inches high A raised island on Beacon Ave- nue will be a lot smaller than Sidney council originally envi- sioned, aldermen heard Jan. 22. The main part of the island will be 900 millimetres, or about three feet, wide. A letter from Highways says the divider can’t go as far as Seventh because there’s not enough right- of-way for necessary widening. Also, the proposed island would go far enough to block all the turns necessary. Ald. Herb Addison said the proposal looks like an improve- ment. “If someone makes a mis- take, it’s not going to be to damag- ing,” he said. : g Quipped Mayor Norma Sealey, “If they’re going to miss seeing a divider, heaven help the people who get in their way.” Council approved the interim design, which Highways says will be in place until an interchange is built at the Beacon and Pat Bay. According to the Highways plan, bell the divider will shrink to 150-mm = by 150-mm at the west Travelodge entrance. The smaller curb swings left to form a left-turn slot for the next access. Also, a “storage slot” in the middle of the avenue will allow exits onto the eastbound lane. The letter from Highways does not say when the island will be built. service now by calling: 656-1811 We are in your neighbourhood to service -Septic systems and if your system has not been serviced in the last 2-3 years, we recommend you take advantage of our ASEPTIC.
