Sidney Old Buoys one of 92 teams and better than some oldtimers The Sidney Old Buoys were only one of 92 oldtimers hockey teams that converged on Greater Victoria last weekend for the 1990 Pacific Cup Oldtimer’s Hockey Tournament. But they probably did better - than some teams, advancing to the consolation round semi-final ‘before getting knocked out. @ In the Old Buoys’ first game "early Friday morning the Calgary Cowboys proved they could win, dominating for a 6-2 victory, then ~ going on to win that division later. aStampers set for new year of philately Friday afternoon the Old Buoys had better luck, defeating the Port Alberni Old Puckers 5-4. Then, early Saturday aftemoon the Old Buoys dominated the old- timers from CFB Comox at Pano- rama Leisure Centre, winning with a 8-3 score. Pursuing philately for another year are the junior and senior members of the Sidney Stamp Club. Both groups elected their 1990 officers Jan. 6 during meetings at the Sidney Library. Heading the year-old junior club are chairman Betty Austin and vice-chairman Paul Whyte, both members of the senior club. From the junior members came secretary Tiffany Carrier, treasurer James Smith, joint project organiz- ers Merlin Lee and Deven Carrier and bid board-lucky draw orga- gu Douglas Lovett. The junior club is for stamp collectors aged eight to 15 years. New members are always welcome to the club, which now has 13 members. The junior club started with three members a year ago. Parents are also welcome to attend junior club meetings. The membership fee for junior members is $1 annually. At 16, junior club members can join the senior club. The 1990 executive for the senior club are chairman Jim Austin, treasurer Stan Escott, communications coordinator Peter Wilson, refresh- The win moved the Sidney team into the consolation semi-final game against a team from Camp- bell River. A quick trip downtown to Memorial Arena and the team was back on the ice for a 3 p.m. start. Players gave it their best shot in a good game, but Campbell River edged out the Sidney team on the scoreboard with a 3-2 victory. “Tt was a good game though,” team spokesman Elburn Ottewell said. The annual Pacific Cup tourna- ment for players 35-years and older drew 92 teams from all over Canada this year. Each team is placed in a divi- sion based on its ability. Some teams, like the Edmonton Old Kings, have ex-NHL players on them. Both groups meet the first Sat- urday of every month, except July and August, in the Nell Horth room of the Sidney Library. The 20-player roster plays an exhibition schedule during the reg- ular season. In July, the Old Buoys had the ease honorable distinction of taking SE first place in the Charles Shultz Snoopy tournament in Santa Rosa California. A trophy from that victory is on display at Panorama, Ottewell said. “The (Pacific Cup) is the big- gest oldtimers’ tournament in Canada and you could probably say it’s the biggest oldtimers’ tour- nament in the world,” Ottewell said.
