Juvenile trial set for June

Three teenagers charged with
first-degree murder in the death of
a Sidney taxi driver will go to trial,
June 18.

The Victoria youth court trial
date was set Monday. By June,
Crown counsel Dirk Ryneveld
hopes to have a decision on the
crown’s appeal to raise the juve-
niles to adult court.

The three were charged after
66-year-old Kenneth Scott was
found stabbed to death in Central
Saanich on Oct. 12, 1988.

Volunteer maintenance of the
municipal wharf for over 10 years
will be recognized by a letter of
thanks from North Saanich coun-
cil,

Bill Blaauw has maintained the
wharf beside his Deep Cove prop-
erty since the municipality
acquired the facility in the late
1970s.

The 83-year-old Blaauw wrote .
council saying that he could no
longer maintain the wharf because
his wife is ill. He suggested main-
tenance of the wharf be referred to
the parks commission.

In December the B.C. Court of
Appeal ruled that the three 16-
year-olds must be tried in youth
court.

Ryneveld plans an appeal of that
decision to the Supreme Court of
Canada.

Also charged in Scott’s death
was Michael Lee Allen, who was
sentenced to four years in jail for
manslaughter.

The Crown is seeking a longer
sentence before the B.C. Court of
Appeal today.
