TheReview _ Wednesday, January 17, 1990 - News Z = AG Local liberals ready for new constituency CLIVE TANNER The resignation of Premier Bill _ Vander Zalm tonight and a provin- cial election in a year is predicted by Clive Tanner, president of the newly formed Saanich North and the Islands Liberal constituenc; association. The Sidney businessman, who - Yan provincially for the Liberals in 1986, was elected president at the new association’s founding meet- ing. E Another general meeting will be held in early February to elect a full 10-member executive, Tanner said Monday. Present executive members are vice-president Paul Wheeler, trea- surer Peter McCalman and secret- ary Christine Tanner. In February new association will chose delegates and debate resolu- tions for the April provincial con- vention in Vancouver. Any member wishing to volun- teer for office or nominate a candi- date should call nominating com- mittee chairman Marney Roe at 656-9116. A nominating meeting to choose a candidate will be called by the new executive later in the year Tanner said he enjoyed being the Liberal candidate in the last Saa- nich and the Islands provincial election. ~T’ve run in four campaigns and that is the one I enjoyed the most,” he said. He predicts a provincial election in the spring of 1991, following the premier’s resignation tonight and a Social Credit leadership convention in three months. Tanner worked on the Liberal campaign for the December Oak Bay byelection, won by New Dem- ocrat Elizabeth Cull over Social Credit candidate and Oak Bay Mayor Susan Brice. Liberal candidate Paul McKivett collected nine per cent of the vote. Tanner was president of the Saanich and the Islands constitu- ency association for four years. The Saanich South constituency is chaired by Cliff Vickery, until an annual general meeting is held. On March 1, the former two- member Saanich and the Islands constituency will be divided into Saanich North and the Islands and Saanich South.
