Originally set up by the Ministry of the Environ- ment, the organization provides useful employment and learning portunities for its members, var- ying from eight to twenty-three weeks during the early spring, summer and fall. Members vary in age from 16 to 24. Groups are engaged in a wide Bspectrum of important projects including enhancing fish and wild- life habitat, improving outdoor recreation facilities, enhancing regional and urban parks, the con- struction and improvement of trails for hiking, riding and skiing, recycling, assembling data on environmental resources— Projects are essentially hands on 1 in nature, providing meaningful @ experiences that give participants a genuine sense of accomplish- we ® All work is initiated and care- Fully supervised by senior person- nel with lengthy practical experi- TheReview Add a little youth and watch what happens ence, including, in North Saanich, Igor Zahynacz, municipal engi- neer; Jo Doman, trails co- ordinator; and Robert Nash, site supervisor. Readers undoubtedly saw members of the Youth Corps working industriously on the clean up of the recent Sooke oil spill. The team of Robert Nash, Ian Hatt, Leah Luckhurst, Colin McRae, Rick Mogenson, Sasha Tarasoff and Troy Wolfe have been recently concentrating their efforts upon the upgrading of trails in the linear park in the Green Park area where today’s photo was taken. Readers will recall that this gen- eral area was ecologically dam- aged during the development phase. Fortunately, the Youth Corps have seen fit to plant no fewer than a thousand cedar and fir trees along this trail. Trees which will enhance privacy, protect the trail surface, prevent soil erosion, pro- “vide essential habitat for flora.and Wednesday, January 17,1990 — B13 fauna, and in general increase the esthetics of the area. Specifically, two trails in the area have been upgraded by the Youth Corps during this season - the one which leaves West Saanich Road just north of Kanishay Road, crosses Woodcreek Drive and intersects Landsend Road and the other which proceeds from Land- send Road south to Oriole. Our communities are privileged in having the volunteered and energetic expertise of Trails Co- ordinator, Jo Doman, who has worked steadfastly over the years in the interests of securing ready access to many enjoyable regions of our Peninsula.
