~ News TheReview Wednesday, January 17,1990 — B3 . [INLET PROTECTION Continued from Page B1 bell, the area director for Cowi- chan Bay. Campbell was referring to lob- bying by other Saanich Peninsula groups: against Chevron Canada — Ltd.’s Hatch Point Tank Farm in the early 1980s and against a posal to build a ferrochromium plant at Bamberton in 1988-89. “And they still have all their water on the outside where they can dump their garbage and all the rest,” Campbell added. P Brian Harrison, the director for Mill Bay, called it an “affront” to receive notification of the meeting on short notice. “T think it’s only fair that the merely wants an indication of who will attend by the 19th. She said the invited guests can prepare their presentations up to the meeting date. “Tt still puts a very tight dead- line on it,” Harrison said. Box also pointed out her society — formed in November 1988 — is merely exploring the pros and cons of establishing a marine park reserve in the Inlet. She said the society isn’t trying to impose the idea on anybody. “Our focus all along has been a mutual interest in the Inlet,” she said. “‘We obviously have con- cerns about activity on and around . ‘It’s a unique area for scientific 2 ‘esearch. That’s why the Instifute of Ocean Sciences and three universities have facilifies on if -Arlene Box people in the community most affected have a say,” he said. Box, who is also a Central Saanich alderman, said in an inter- view, 1 agree the time was rather short, but there was some unfor- tunate difficulty that came up that created that short notice.” She didn’t elaborate. However, Box said the society & CENTRAL SAANICH Ald. Arlene Box is one member of a new society which wants to see the Saanich Inlet preserved as a national park. The group plans a meeting at Duns- muir Lodge Feb. 3 on the issue, but has drawn criti- cism from the Cowichan Valley Regional District for giving insufficient notice of the meeting. the Inlet. At this point we are looking at stressing the positive.” Jim Ayers, Cowichan regional director for Sahtlam-Glenora- Eagle Heights, disagreed with his ~ board colleagues. “Tet me offer some small def- ence,” he said. “It’s not a deci- sion-making body. It appears to be a private organization.” Ayers said the group’s intentions are “very clear.” “T don’t think it needs to be seen asa case of railroading,” Ayers said. “I think it’s a small organization preparing a case for further lobbying a few years down the road.” Box said the society has no timetable for making a presenta- tion. The society is now merely “exploring the opportunity” of establishing a park reserve, she said. She did say the northern bound- ary of such a reserve would extend from Hatch Point, near Cobble Hill, to Moses Point at the north end of the Peninsula. And Box offered some reasons why the Inlet would make a suita- ble candidate for reserve status: > its unique salinity and low tidal flushing action, which makes it one of the best marine archaeolo- gical sites in the world; ° its warm-water beaches; e its habitat for giant octopi; * its recognition, by National Geographic, as one of the top recreational diving areas in the world; and e its many other recreational uses. “It’s a very unique area for scientific research,” she said. “That’s why the Institute of Ocean Sciences and three universities have facilities on it.” GOUHUC The Feb. 3 meeting, which starts at 8:30 p.m., is by invitation only, Box said. “The press has not been invited at this time,” she said. The regional district's Campbell also criticized Box for using the title “alderman” on the society’s letter. “J don’t really have any com- ment on that,” she said. “He is entitled to his opinion.
