News TheReview + Residents must wait for plan process to run its course, Central Saanich says — under pressure for response fo commission No decision yet on ALR removal by Glenn Werkman @ The Review SS 4 cemoval from the agricultural land - at Central Saanich residents will have to wait for council to review hundreds of comments — includ- ing those recently received from the land commission — before a position on land reserve removal for urban use is taken in a second draft plan. Residents have asked individual aldermen to take a stand on com- ments from the province’s Agri- cultural Land Commission. In response to the first draft, the commission said it won’t support reserve for urban expansion. But so far, council has said it will wait to digest comments and compose a second draft of the plan. “Tm listening, r m not talking,” Ald. Wayne Watkins told the Jan. 8 council meeting. Whether agricultural land will we be designated as future urban development in a second draft is not known. In the first draft, 198 acres of ALR land is identified for future urban development. “Bill Ashwell, chairman of the Association for the Protection of Rural Central Saanich, pressured council members to individually = state a position on the commis- _ sion’s stance. FE “The community is” -alarmed #% that council is not responding to its @ concern for the ALR, * Ashwell said during question period. “We keep getting a feeling of ae support for the ALR for council. Could we hear from each individ- ual council member?” Ashwell asked. Mayor Ron Cullis said council hadn’t met to discuss the land commission’s comments and said they shouldn’t be made a central @ssue in the community plan review process. Ald. Gary Valiquette said he supports the letter from the com- mission “in its entirety.” Ald. Arlene Box wouldn’t say whether she supports the letter’s recommendations. “Apthis time we have to look at all the information before us and ‘I’m listening, I’m not ___ talking’ -Ald. Wayne Watkins continue on discussing it,” Box said. Ald. Wayne Hunter voiced his respect for the land commission’s authority but said a process | ~+ * be followed. “The letter is addressed to Tom Becker (of UMA. Engineering Ltd.’s planning department) and Becker will come back to us together with the results of all meetings held in the community.” Hunter said mountains of corre- spondence has been received from the public and council is working its way through it.
