The fifth annual Pioneer 8- Kilometre Road Race started late @boecause race computers initially couldn’t handle a record registra- tion of 715 people, organizer John Bones said. That number was up from about 650 last year and organizers are considering a limited registration for next year. Computer glitches aside, Gus Gustafson of the Saanich Histori- cal Artifacts Society fired his can- non marking the start of the race and a short 24 minutes and 15 seconds later Canadian Common- wealth Games track team member Gary Barber crossed the finish line, followed by three fellow Vikes Racing Team members. On their heels was Peninsula Track coach and Prairie Inn Har- rier Tom Michell, who finished fifth overall and first in the men’s pre-masters 30-34 age group with a time of 24:58. “He ran an excellent race,” Bones said. “He missed beating his Own course record by two seconds, probably because he was one of the organizers and could have been checking out the mar- shalling.”” Peninsula track athletes did sim- ilarly well. Chad De Pol ran a great race in 26:14 and took first place in the @junior 13-19 age group, although he didn’t beat a time of 25:49. he set last year. Teammate Jain Brambell also did well, placing among the top ten in the junior boys’ category. Peninsula Track runner Sarah Thornber placed third in the junior girls’ division with a time of 32:28, Alana Eeg followed in eighth place with 34:34 and Andrea De Pol trailed in ninth at 852335 Once again the Praine Inn Har- riers dominated the field in the mens 45-49 category with second, third, fourth, fifth and tenth place victories. In the 50-59 category there was five Harmers in the top ten, Bones said. Veteran Harrier runner Maurice Tarrant bettered his previous course record by 25 seconds and set an unofficial Canadian record for an eight-kilometre race for runners over 60. Other record breakers were Ulla Marquette with a time of 27:25 in the pre-masters women (30-34) event, Barbara Bertch with a time of 33:13 in the masters women (40-49) and Harrier Merrill Har- low with a time of 36:20 in the masters women (50-59) category. Harlow shaved about 50 seconds off the course record she set last year, Bones said. Simon Timmer of Duncan took about 20 seconds off his previous course record with a 26:39 time to win the mens masters (40-49) category. Local masters women runner Rosamund Dashwood didn’t make the race because of a flu bug, Bones said. “Tt was a very successful race in the opinion of the organizers,” Bones said. He estimates the crowd on West Saanich Road in Brentwood and elsewhere along the course at about 200 people. Central Saanich police helped with traffic control and provided the vintage 1954 police cruiser as the lead vehicle. A local church group helped with hot coffee at the finish and Michell Farms parked a flatbed truck for photographers to clamber aboard and the cannon to be shot from. The Pioneer 8-K was the first of an eight-race Island road race series.
