To give smokers extra incentive, the local Canadian Cancer Society unit and four area stores are offer- ing turkeys to those who quit Cold Turkey on Jan. 24. Four names will be drawn Jan. 27 for the turkeys, donated by Oakcrest, Malba Deli, Safeway and Thrifty Food stores. Smokers — who quit can enter the draw by throwing their last package of cigarettes, with their name and phone number on the package, into bins set up in local stores. The Canadian Cancer Society offers tips for those who want to quit. Before Cold Turkey Day, list all. the reasons for quitting. And get md of leftover cigarettes, matches, lighters and ashtrays. Deep breathing and relaxation techniques can help overcome cravings, as can exercise like run- ning or walking. Find a healthy alternative to smoking. 2 Signs of recovery from smoking can include feeling imitable, dizzy, coughing, sleep changes, itchy hands and feet or feeling depre- ssed. All of these side effects are temporary and last only a few weeks. After Cold Turkey Day, keep alert to situations where you might be tempted to smoke, and think of alternatives ahead of time. Remember the benefits of quitting, like personal satisfaction, impro- ved health and appearance, more energy and a better sense of smell and taste. Anyone who smoked a pack a day will save $50 a month. An information session on quit- ting smoking will be held Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. in the boardroom of the Canadian Cancer Society, 2206 Richmond Ave., Victoria. To pre- register in this free program, call 592-2244. The local branch of the Cana- dian Cancer Society also has advice for anyone wanting to quit smoking or anyone wanting to help a friend or relative quit smoking. District smoke banned for day by NS council North Saanich council backed Cold Turkey Day by ruling Monday night that no smoking would be permitted in municipal hall Jan. 24. Mayor Linda Michaluk also declared the week of Jan. 21 to 27 to be national non-smoking week in the municipality. “Was there any thought by staff to make this smoking ban continue more than one day?” “There was by some staff,” said municipal clerk Joan Schill.
