News TheReview Wednesday, January 10,1990 — AI6 socreds gear up for election fight in new fields; as constituency split looms by Glenn Werkman The Review Local Socred constituency asso- ciation president Mark Dickinson doesn’t expect an election to be called by Premier Bill Vander Zalm during an announced Jan. 17 address to the province. But two new constituency asso- ciations will be formed in mid- February in preparation for the next general election. “Tm not prepared to make a comment on the party leadership, Dickinson said. “The premier is obviously considering the whole situation. “Who knows what will happen on Jan. 17. I don’t anticipate an election being called.” The Saanich and The Islands Socred constituency association president is stepping down from his post effective March 1, when the Socreds plan to have new “constituency associations in place in the new Saanich North and The Islands and Saanich South consti- tuencies. Founding meetings for the new associations will be held Feb. 16 for Saanich North and Feb. 22 for Saanich South. Locations have yet to be determined. As a regional director represent- ing south Island Socreds (Region 1), Dickinson will be at a provin- cial Socred meeting Jan. 18-20 in Vancouver to discuss the direction of the party. “Region 1 will go from five constituencies to eight,’ Dickin- son said. “There’s a lot of reorgan- ization and restructuring to be done and we're on schedule to get it done.” The redrawn constituency boundaries won’t go into effect until a writ is dropped calling the next general election and nomina- tion meetings won’t be held until then. An executive for each of the new constituency associations will be elected at the mectings in mid- February. “Any kind of activity like this, when you get action going on, always generates interest and is always good for the party,” Dick- inson said. “I believe it will attract new people into management positions in the party,” he said. Possible candidates for the posi- tion of constituency association president are Mickey De Bruin for Saanich North and Joanne Willi- ams for Saanich South. Williams is currently vice- president of the association and is the wife of Saanich Ald. Ray Williams. Dickinson has been onthe Socred’s Saanich and The Islands constituency association executive since 1983 and will finish his fourth term as president. The association currently has one of the largest executives in the province at 29 members and has a membership of about 2,000, he said. _ CLEARANCE SALE!!!
