Often, however, it’s the rifle or shotgun of a poacher, according to owners Pacific Parkland Properties Inc. Security stepped up to combat deer rustlers by Glenn Werkman The Review Security men will be out at night patrolling the beaches of James Island, looking for rustlers who have been shooting and steal- ing deer. “We'll be increasing security over there, particularly at night,” said Tom Loney, vice-president of planning for the island’s owner, Pacific Parkland Properties Inc. “If we catch anyone doing this they’re going to be in a world of hurt,” Loney said. Over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays Pacific Parkland estimates as many as 100 deer were shot and taken from the island. © Piles of deer insides have been found but birds in the area clean up the evidence quickly, he said. The island’s owners have been removing some of the estimated 800 deer from the island, on their way to game farms up-Island and in Kamloops. Loney said: “The capture will take about 400 deer off, which will take the herd down to the number of deer we can support.” Several times wounded deer had to be put down after they were found among the herd during the capture. The company plans a game farm to complement a residential and recreational development slated for the island. A resident caretaker has heard shots fired several times. Holland said the island’s caret- aker is there to provide a presence. “I can’t blame him for not wanting to confront guys with rifles. That takes a lot of guts,” Holland said. Pacific Parkland allows natives from bands on the Peninsula to hunt deer on the island’ with: per- mission at certain times of the year when a request is made. Holland said he’s sure native hunters are not taking the deer illegally and suspects hunters intent on getting the deer for food ~ are responsible. “The way it’s going every freezer on the Peninsula will have fallow deer in it,” Holland said. The fallow deer, which are smaller than white-tailed deer, were introduced to the island by a sportsman’s club around the tum of the century.
