News Tree burn bogged down Cardboard boxes and 20 minutes of determination got Central Saa- nich’s third annual Christmas tree burn blazing — despite a down- pour that turned the Saanichton @ fairgrounds into a marsh Saturday. € Bo *Y «|started | found shortly after they. were In an hour, an estimated 500 trees went up in smoke, overseen by a handful of Lions Club mem- bers. Lion Joe Sparrow estimated 50 people, most of them club members or their friends or rela- tives, waited for the belated bon- fire. The field was already soggy from earlier rainfall as local resi- dents dropped off trees and dona- tions all day Saturday. “Tt was sprinkling at 2 p.m., raining at 4 p.m. and pouring at 5 -p.m.,” said Sparrow. In order to get the wet trees buming, Lions started a fire using cardboard boxes from the hot chocolate and coffee served to participants. The event raised almost $400, which will be donated to local charities. On Sunday, Lions Club mem- bers cleaned up the grounds. Spar- row said the soggy night had not dampened club enthusiasm for the Christmas tree bum, which will be held again next year. Fires New Year’s Two fires were started in the downtown area of Sidney New Year’s Eve, Sidney REMP said. One fire was starfed in a Salvation Army donation col- lection box in between two buildings on Second Street, police said. The fire department was not required because the fires were started, Cpl. Joe Gerich said. Another fire was also started on New Year’s Eve. A wooden newsstand on Beacon Avenue next to the Macleod’s hardware store was started on fire. Police managed to put both minor fires out and have no suspects. They are continuing to inves- tigate and hope to lay charges of mischief. DESTINED FOR THE STAGE is part of an Arbutus tree, Cut from private property on West Saanich Road near Brentwood Bay. ff will be used during Kaleidoscope Theatre ’s production of Callendish, a daring escape adventure, planned for the Kaleidoscope Playhouse Jan. 18-20 and Jan. 27-Feb. 10. Set and costume designer Jennifer Green said the tree will appear to be a bonazi — an Oriental tree thousands of years old that has been pruned to remain only about three-feet fall. Theatre workers Cam Avery and Gary Johnson climbed the tree, hooked up ropes so the limb could be lowered without resulting damage and cuit the damaged limb with a chainsaw. It was then loaded into a van for the trip to downtown Victoria. TheReview Central Saanich has expanded Keating Ridge’s Rodolph Park by two acres in a move toward devel- oping large parks instead of tiny neighborhood parks. The municipality already owned the 1.5-acre park, another acre was dedicated to the district as part of a subdivision development and the additional acre was purchased, for over $100,000, to make the park about 3.5 acres, municipal clerk Gay Wheeler said. “We felt it was a good buy for Central Saanich,” parks commit- tee chairman Ald. Wayne Hunter said. “One disappointment through subdivisions was we acquired parks, but they re too small to have games and they’re difficult to maintain,’ Hunter said. He said there are more than 10 small neighborhood parks in the municipality and public works crews find it difficult to get mow- ers and other maintenance equip- Tent trailer disappears A white tent trailer with gold trim was reported stolen from Harbour Road in Sidney, near Van Isle Marina at about 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sidney RCMP said. Wednesday, January 10,1990 — A5 Park expanded in Keating Ridge ment into them. “We decided we wouldn’t go for small parks and we decided we'd try to get larger parks or acquire - the funds and put them in a park purchase fund,” Hunter said. What was the existing portion of the park is heavily treed while the new area 1s level and was used as part of a farming operation, he said. “Now we have to decide whether to make it an all-weather field and design it,” Hunter said. “T’m sure the new report will give us some new ideas for that.” Central Saanich has hired a consultant to do a recreation facil- ities feasibility study, expected to be completed by mid-March. Meetings with groups that use and develop park facilities in Cen- - tral Saanich have already been held by the consultant. 18 week TRAVEL AGENT TRAINING $1800 Prepares YOU for a career in one of the fastest expanding job markets - tourism. xCareers in Travel Counselling, Air- lines, Cruise Lines, Tour Wholesalers, Hotels, Tour Guide/Escort and other sectors. *100+ Hours Training on Reservec Air- line Reservations System. xInternship Program in local Travel Agency. *Preparation for National Certificate Examinations. “xComprehensive Job Placement Pro- ram.
