Hundreds went into the frigid water and most turned around and came right back out. A select few stayed in the water for as long as 20 minutes before coming out fo warm up with hot soup and blankets. . Cannon planned to start Pioneer Road Race Sunday The deafening roar of a cannon again will start the Pioneer 8- Kilometre road race, Sunday at the comer of West Saanich Road and Wallace Drive in Central Saanich. Organizer John Bones said the idea of getting runners to dress in costume has been dropped, but the fine tradition of starting the race with the blast of a cannon, provid- ed by the Saanich Historical Arti- facts Society, will be heard again. It all starts at 11:30 a.m. and follows a course through residen- tial streets of Central Saanich. Runners are asked to register between 10 and 11 a.m. at the Brentwood Hall, on Wallace just west of West Saanich. “About 700 people are expected to start this year’s race, reflecting the growing popularity of short toad races,” Bones said. “Among the pre-race favonites is Tom Michell of Saanichton who has won two of his last races and is off to a promising start in the men’s 30-35 age group,” Bones said. EAGLES Continued from Page B4 “If our guys get into top shape we can play with anyone in the province,’ Mowat said. , The team has less than three months to get ready. The Pacific Cup is scheduled for April 6-8 at Panorama. To go all the way the Eagles will have to play in the provincial final Apmil 13-15 against the Kootenay league winner, then the Western Canadians April 19-22 in Inver- mere. “We learned a lesson from what we Saw and will begin rectifying the problem,” Mowat said. “I can’t stress this enough, the best team is always the fittest.” Other Prairie Harrier club mem- bers are expected to do well, ‘including regular master category winners Maurice Tarrant and Rosamund Dashwood, who hold Canadian and provincial records in the over-60 category. Motorists beware Road travel will be restricted between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the Brentwood and Saani- chton area and motorists are asked to follow the direction of 30 route marshals and Central Saanich police, who will be at strategic intersections along the course. The runners will be led by a recently restored police cruiser from the *50s as part of the contribution of the Central Saa- nich police force, Bones said. This is the Fifth Annual Pioneer Race and is the first of an eight- race Island Road Race series spon- _ sored by Thnifty Foods. Awards will be given to the top eight placings in each of 17 men’s and women’s age categories, which included both boys and girls cleaning plant or present under-13 age categories for the first time this year, Bones said. The registration fee is $9 and includes refreshments and a chance to win over 35 draw prizes. emis Funeral Chapels 656-2932 or 388-5155 Offer a complete choice of Professional Services. — TRADITIONAL — MEMORIAL — DIRECT CREMATION — FULL © PRE-ARRANGEMENTS SERVICES Services from your church or in either of our chapels at 1803 QUADRA STREET VICTORIA = ee 8 8 2 2 eee. eee BS SS ee ey LUG-A-RUG Save $$$ with our CASH’N’CARRY DISCOUNT and lug your rugs to our this ad for our FREE* Saturday pick-up and > delivery service. & ee ew L:] Femme es SS es ee eee eee ee ee ed ee * Min. pick-up LD charge $40.00 J FREE ESTIMATES : 380-3922 , ASK ABOUT: I.E. 5’x8’ Rug 8a.m.6pm Mon-Sat. ff e New Fringes Reg. $60 e anes 40 (Hashna Court) i pepo now D 3347 OAK STREET °GiipPad A division of DREWAY The Dry Carpet Cleaners © 1989 5 DISTRICT OF NORTH SAANICH NOTICE TO DOG OWNERS 1990 dog licences are required for all dogs in North Saanich.
